Chartered Accountants Ireland reaction to UK Budget: Small businesses bear the heaviest burden and the increase in NIC is unlikely to be sustainable for many. Commenting, Janette Burns, Chair of Chartered Accountants Ireland NI Tax Committee said, “In a rush to repair the funding gap in public finances and keep pre-election promises not to raise tax on working people, the hike in employers’ national insurance contributions (NIC) as well as a rise in the minimum wage means small businesses, many of whom are already struggling, will face increased labour costs. Although some businesses will be partially protected by increased allowances, the 1.2% rise in employer NIC is unlikely to be sustainable for many.” Gillian Sadlier, Chair of Chartered Accountants Ulster Society said, “The extent to which the various measures announced in today’s Budget will lead to real growth across the UK economy remains to be seen. Ultimately, businesses are the drivers of growth and what this Budget has done is increase their overheads. There were some smaller innovative measures that the government could have announced which would have cost relatively little.” Read our full reaction here: https://lnkd.in/ebPxrZu8 Read our summary of measures included here: https://lnkd.in/eYsjbwkP Read media coverage of our commentary here: https://lnkd.in/e7SCF58J Zara Duffy Cróna Clohisey Gearóid O'Sullivan Leontia Doran Barry Doyle Barry Dempsey Gráinne McDermott Pictured: Gillian Sadlier, Chair, Chartered Accountants Ulster Society
