A joy today to start the new Scottish school year with a small group of primary school teachers, such excitement as they prepare for the 8 week #DoGood #entrepreneurship programme that involves around 80 young people in primary school, 20 young people from S3 in secondary school as well as parents/guardians and business partners. The learning outcomes are wide with a focus on #enterprising skills and qualities such as teamwork, resilience, positive mindsets and the important attitude of helping their local community through learning, earning and #giving. #learningearningGIVING Kids love learning to be #entrepreneurs and especially making money that makes a difference, it is also fantastic for the young people and their mental health as when engaged in purposeful kindness and the can do culture of enterprise the smiles are always big. Congratulations to Keir Starmer on his election victory. This new Labour government have a huge majority, giving them a crucial opportunity to address many of the devastating challenges that children across the country face. They must not squander our children’s futures. We ask the new Prime Minister to prioritise actions that put the needs of children first such as tackling child poverty, protecting them from online harm, investing in early help for families and incorporating the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into UK law so that we can keep children happy, safe and together with their families. https://lnkd.in/eRH4uEVk

People going without essentials has an impact on primary schools. New Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) research with primary school staff found they are having to provide support to pupils and families experiencing hardship: 🍽 Staff estimate 35% of pupils have come to school hungry at some point since the school year began (44% in deprived areas) 🥫 A third (32%) told us their school offers a food bank 🛌 A quarter (25%) say they provide other essentials (such as toiletries, energy top-up vouchers, beds and bedding) 👛 Nearly 2 in 5 (38%) say staff are providing direct support out of their own pocket. Really eye-opening new research from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) https://lnkd.in/e-_SR_Yp exposing the stark realities of life for schools (and colleges) as staff try to support families with the effects of extreme poverty and hardship. A reminder: we're one of the 10 biggest economies in the world! The latest official figures show 4.3 million UK children – about one in three – were in relative poverty in 2022-23. More than 1 million youngsters experienced destitution – extreme material hardship – while charity food banks gave out record numbers of emergency food parcels last year. Schools said they were devoting growing resources to “firefighting” behavioural issues stemming from pupil and parent hunger, poverty, poor housing and mental ill health. This meant less time and energy spent on core teaching, triggering a negative ripple effect on all the children in the class. A reminder: we're one of the 10 biggest economies in the world! It’s shocking that 1 in 4 children in Scotland and nearly 1 in 3 across the UK are living in poverty. The next UK Government and the Scottish Government must do more to prioritise ending child poverty. The next UK Government must make ending child poverty in the UK a priority. It can start by: 1️⃣ Scrapping the two-child limit 2️⃣ Ending the five week wait for Universal Credit for families 3️⃣ Putting a UK child poverty strategy in place The First Minister, John Swinney, must do more with the devolved powers he has to end child poverty in Scotland. The Scottish Government must: 1️⃣ Increase the Scottish Child Payment to £40 2️⃣ Tackle the public debt crisis 3️⃣ Increase free school meal edibility to all children who receive the Scottish Child Payment #EndChildPoverty

I'm in South Yorkshire tonight preparing for tomorrow's work with young people teaching them entrepreneurship and how they can prosper and make a difference.......however have a look at the pictures attached below of their home town. This is just the visible external. With research we will possibly find, low paid jobs, low skills, unemployment, disability, poor educational attainment etc etc I'm feeling unsettled at this deprivation, a scandal, how are kids,families and communities going to turn this around? I'm certainly going to help them tomorrow and the months to come. Funny thing is I'm staying in an old Carnegie Library that has been converted into a Bed and Breakfast, I wonder what he would of thought of the area and the social challenges.
