Last week, police staff investigators and officers from the Fraud Impact Team forced entry into the home address of a male suspect in Surrey. The suspect is believed to have stolen credit cards in the name of elderly victims and used their details to compromise their accounts. This allowed him to move funds from their accounts and order new debit cards which he used to withdraw and/or spend money on a lavish lifestyle and high value goods, including Rolex watches, jewellery and designer clothes. A total of £56,796.16 has been fraudulently spent from one victim’s account without their knowledge or consent.
About us
Policing the Square Mile brings with it particular challenges, quite unlike any other policing area within the UK. The City of London is the world’s leading international financial and business centre. It is an area where disruption to ‘business as usual’ would have significant impact on the diverse range of business interests located here. We are committed to fighting crime at all levels. Although we fulfil a national role tackling fraud and other serious criminality, our local role is no less important to us.

Anything to declare? 🛬 Earlier this month, officers from Lead Force Operation Room (LFOR) arrested a suspected smishing fraudster as he landed at Heathrow after a long-haul flight. The man was suspected of orchestrating a delivery text fraud where victims would receive a message and be convinced into handing over details and making payment. He was taken to a police station for interview and bailed.

Lead Force Operation Room’s DS Marc Cananur appeared on yesterday’s episode of Crimewatch Live as part of a courier fraud appeal. Courier fraud is a heinous crime where criminals pretend to be from your bank and/or the police to try and move money out of your account. The appeal comes after joint working with partners in the Metropolitan Police and Greater Manchester related to a series of courier frauds that were carried out across the country. Do you know these men? Watch the full episode here: https://bbc.in/4kIBuBg

Our role, and duty, as National Lead Force for fraud means that we constantly need to be on the front foot and be proactive in our approach. Henhouse is a fantastic example of the results that can be achieved through collaborative working with our partners across the UK As part of Henhouse 4, City of London Police officers executed 32 warrants, made 42 arrests, and conducted 19 voluntary interviews. City of London Police seized 861 uninsured vehicles across the region between January and December last year. All police forces submit monthly vehicle seizure statistics to Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB), the UK entity responsible for reducing levels of uninsured driving and compensating individuals involved in a collision with an uninsured or hit-and-run driver. Despite being one of the UK’s smallest forces, City of London Police have a dedicated and skilled Roads Policing Unit determined to remove uninsured drivers from their roads. Last year, they seized 861 uninsured vehicles across the region, an increase of 11% on 2023 results As well as taking part in the annual nationwide MIB-led initiative Operation Drive Insured, they also collaborated with MIB on Operation Giant, a City of London Police initiative to target all areas of criminality both within and transient through the city. These targeted operations helped achieve the outstanding 2024 results, clearly demonstrating the link between uninsured driving and wider criminality. Uninsured vehicles pose a significant risk to other road users. Whilst those aiming to be law-abiding motorists may fall foul of common insurance pitfalls, such as assuming their policy has auto-renewed or that they are covered to drive other vehicles, over 60% of uninsured vehicles seized through the ongoing initiative Operation Tutelage are found to have links to serious secondary offences. Notably, during Operation Drive Insured in November, City of London Police seized an uninsured vehicle and identified cannabis with a street value of £35,000. Another stop resulted in a possession with intent to supply (PWITS) of Class A drugs after multiple wraps of cocaine were found inside the vehicle. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e3SPAXk3

🚨 New Campaign Alert Action Fraud have launched a new awareness campaign, supported by Meta, about social media and email hacking. We encourage people to take an extra step of online protection by enabling 2-Step Verification for each online account they have. ⚠️ Last year, 35,434 people reported that their online accounts had been hacked in 2024, with victims losing a total of nearly £1 million. To avoid being hacked: ➡️ We recommend enabling 2-step verification (2SV). This can keep hackers out of your account, even if they know your password. ➡️ Use a strong and different password for your email and social media accounts to protect your information.
