🛳️⚡Kicking off the European Shipping Summit (ESS) this morning in sunny Brussels with a lively discussion on Onshore Power Supply (OPS)—the key to reducing emissions in ports and advancing net-zero goals. Mike Corrigan, CEO of Interferry and Julie Green, CLIA Deputy Director General opened the session, emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration between cruise lines, ports, and policymakers to accelerate OPS deployment. Key takeaways: ⚓Cruise industry leadership: 146 CLIA cruise ships are OPS-ready—over half the fleet. This grew 20% in a year and will reach 238 ships by 2028. ⚓Infrastructure gap: More investment is needed. ⚓Regulatory alignment: OPS is crucial for meeting FuelEU Maritime goals and reducing costs under EU ETS. ⚓ Call for action: Strategic investments, predictable pricing, and prioritizing cruise berths for OPS are essential. 🗣️As Julie Green highlighted: "OPS is a shared responsibility. Cruise lines are investing in OPS-ready ships, but more investment, more strategic planning, stronger policy support and increased cooperation are needed to accelerate this progress." This discussion also continued the momentum from #CLIACruiseWeek in Rotterdam, where pricing transparency was in focus. Ensuring clarity and predictability in OPS costs is key to expanding its adoption. 🎯 A big thank you to Interferry and European Shipowners | ECSA for the collaboration and for inviting #CLIA to contribute to this crucial debate! 🙌 Isabelle Ryckbost Inesa Ulichina Jorgen Bjerre Claes Berglund #OnshorePowerSupply #NetZero #ESS2025

At CLIA European Cruise Summit in Rotterdam, I emphasized the EU’s commitment to a competitive and sustainable cruise industry. Safety, innovation, and decarbonization must go hand in hand. Through strong collaboration, smart investments, and green technologies, we can ensure that the sector thrives in the future, keeping Europe as a global leader. During my visit to Rotterdam, I had fruitful discussions with cruise industry CEOs. The cruise industry is an integral part of European tourism, making a remarkable contribution to the European economy and supporting thousands of jobs. It is also a major pillar of the European shipbuilding industry, which is of strategic importance to our Union.

🛳️ Attracting the next generation of seafarers – a crucial conversation at #CLIA Cruise Week last week. The cruise industry is focused on giving seafarers from around the world fulfilling careers at sea. A career at sea can offer growth and a pathway to the future. But how do we ensure seafarers have the skills—and support—they need? 🌍⚓ 📄 After the European Commission issued a report highlighting the importance of skills competitiveness in the EU, this timely discussion looked into attracting seafarers, their training, upskilling and the skills of the future. 👩🎓 A cadet in the audience shared a powerful message: There needs to be more representation of cruise careers in maritime curriculums. How can we inspire the next generation if they do not see these opportunities? 🌊 As the moderator Bernard Vanheule put it: "We need to highlight the ocean of opportunities to our European citizens." Attracting talent is only part of the equation. Retaining crew members is just as important. 💡Panelists highlighted why many choose a career at sea: the chance to travel the world, earn salaries that support their families, and gain invaluable professional experience. 🛳️ Cruise lines are taking steps to ensure crew members feel supported—from their first days on board to long-term career growth. Psychological safety, mental well-being, and diversity are key priorities. 🙌 🌍 Neurodiversity plays a crucial role in today’s workforce. Every individual learns, communicates, and experiences the world differently. There is a need to embrace this shift and ensure that both crew and guests feel included, supported, and valued. 👥 New generations bring fresh perspectives, and leadership styles are evolving. It’s not just about following the chain of command, it is about fostering a workplace where everyone thrives. 💡 Want to dive deeper?
