Releasing children from poverty in Jesus' name.

About us

Founded in 1952, Compassion is a Christian child development charity releasing children from poverty, in Jesus’ name. Working in 29 countries, we partner with more than 8,500 local churches within communities experiencing poverty. Our heart is to give children and young people the opportunity to thrive and reach their God-given potential both now and into the future. We’re Christ-centred, motivated by Jesus’ call to love our neighbour. We're child-focused, helping those left most vulnerable to the effects of poverty. And we’re church-driven, running our programmes exclusively in partnership with local churches. Compassion’s child development programmes are holistic, giving children support in every core area of their lives. Because we work in partnership with local churches who know their communities inside out, our programmes are tailored to a child’s age, gender, health, culture and family situation. Independent research shows they are highly effective, and now more than 2.3 million children globally are being released from poverty. • Classrooms around the world may look very different – but they have a lot of similarities - hands in the air, rows of desks, whispering at the back. But their purpose is the same: unlocking a child’s potential. 🌍💡 Education is a basic human right but for 250 million children, it’s out of reach. At Compassion, we’re celebrating the opportunity to make education a reality! 📚 We work alongside our church partners to ensure children at the Compassion project receive the uniforms, fees, and equipment needed to attend school. They’re also supported by dedicated tutors who provide extra help with their studies, giving them the tools to thrive. • “Studying is important for us to grow and become someone in life and to have a good job. I want to be a police officer and have a comfortable and decent home. Despite the long walk to school every day, I won’t give up,” says Thomas. Thomas lives in a rural area in Brazil and faces many challenges, such as difficult access to school, a lack of structure at home, and hunger. Despite these obstacles, Thomas is dedicated to his studies. This International Day of Education, we celebrate the power of learning and the resilience of children like Thomas, who see education as the key to a brighter future. Edilene, Thomas' mum, says, “The Compassion project is a great blessing for my children’s lives. I get emotional thinking about everything they do for us. Also, at the project, my son has computer and music classes. These are things I never would be able to provide to him, but they have a huge impact in his development.” Education has the power to transform lives. • 14-year-old Toma from Bangladesh has been part of her local Compassion project since she was just three years old. Every day, she travels to school on her trusty bicycle, navigating heavy traffic and braving the cyclones and floods that often impact her community. Yet, Toma’s love for learning keeps her going. 📘 “The monsoon season is probably the toughest season for the region as the majority of the children are affected with waterborne diseases and 30% of the schools are surrounded with water, ultimately resulting in almost 1.5 million children in southern Bangladesh not going to school,” shares Swapna, a Social Worker at the Compassion project. Despite these challenges, Toma firmly believes in the power of education to transform lives. She dreams of becoming a police officer, determined to serve her community and stand with those in need. 👮 “To me a perfect school would have classrooms with solid brick walls and the school compound elevated enough to remain dry during monsoon floods, offering a safe refuge for the community,” Toma shares. Thanks to the Compassion project, Toma has been able to continue her education. The project covers her tuition fees, provides essential stationery supplies, and ensures she receives health checkups—all helping her stay on track toward her dreams. 💭 ✨ At Compassion, we believe that education is a key pathway out of poverty. • Frank used to dread going to school. He couldn’t concentrate, became easily irritated, and often isolated himself. Why? He was hungry. Hunger remains a significant barrier to education for many children. Aware of this challenge, the Rwandan Ministry of Education introduced school feeding programs in 2020 to ensure students received meals during school hours. This commitment has already made a remarkable impact, with the percentage of students fed at school rising from 23.0% in 2020/21 to 86.3% in 2021/22. However, for caregivers like Frank’s grandmother Eugenie, covering the costs of school meals was impossible. Thankfully, Frank was enrolled in the Compassion project which was able to cover this expense. Eugenie shares, "Before the school feeding support, Frank often came home angry, and he couldn't concentrate in class. Now, he is full of energy and always eager to learn. This project has been a blessing for us." A simple meal can change everything. If you'd like to support children like Frank, you can learn more here! https://lnkd.in/ejmvuEP5

  • 🎉 Happy New Year from all of us at Compassion UK! 🎉 We pray you're running into the new year with as much excitement as these Compassion supported children in Tanzania. Let's start 2025 right by reading God's word. 📖 Today, we look at Isaiah 40:31 which says, "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." If you'd like to read more of our favourite new year Bible verses, check them out here! 👉 https://bit.ly/3VK3w4k
