This latest report produced in partnership with PeaceRep examines the peace process in Afghanistan. It reviews the current state of the Afghan conflict and assesses the Taliban’s performance in control of the state to inform suggestions on the scope for Afghans to take the initiative on building a peaceful plural alternative to the Taliban’s Islamic Emirate. Last week, Social Change Initiative hosted a visiting delegation from the Philippines and Bangsamoro autonomous region. The delegates, who are involved in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in the Philippines, were particularly interested in learning about the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement - including arrangements for power-sharing and Inter-Governmental arrangements. The delegation was welcomed at Belfast City Hall by Lord Mayor Micky Murray, and later visited the Assembly Buildings at Stormont, where they were greeted by Deputy Speaker Caral Ní Chuilín. They also met with Junior Ministers Pam Cameron and Aisling Reilly, as well as a number of MLAs. During their visit, the delegates explored key aspects of the Northern Ireland peace process, including policing reform, the role of human rights, and mechanisms related to transitional justice. The first election to the Bangsamoro Autonomous region Assembly is due to take place in 2025. This study visit was organised by Conciliation Resources UK with support from the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs.

They ensure that MEL serves to: evaluate the impact of our interventions; improve adaptability and effectiveness of our practice, including the objectives in our Gender Strategy; record, organise and learn from evidence of what works and what doesn’t; improve our knowledge base, culture and practice of capturing and measuring change; and inform the organisation and the wider peacebuilding sector about how to measure progress in peace initiatives. The Head of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning will act as the technical lead on MEL, providing thought leadership, strategic guidance and technical advice to the organisation; on learning goals in our Strategic Plan; on measuring progress towards our peacebuilding goals, our Theory of Change and our Results Framework; and on how to use MEL data for different strategic processes. In 2023, members of the Women’s Dialogue Space (WDS) in the Somali Regional State (SRS) of Ethiopia formally registered ‘Ugaaso’ as an independent civil society organisation in Ethiopia and adopted its current name, which translates as a feminine form of the title given to traditional leaders in Somali culture. Ugaaso-WDS aims to improve women’s participation in decision-making and has the overarching objective of challenging the patriarchal norms and structures that undermine women’s public and political roles in the SRS. This paper aims to showcase some of the innovations and lessons emerging from Ugaaso-WDS, highlighting the strategies that have helped it gain traction to advance women’s political representation and participation.
