Happy 20th birthday, #graphene! Pleased to be the linked application in this article on BBC News, recalling our prototype pour at Depot Mayfield (NB. you don't have to roller-skate to take advantage of the benefits of graphene-enhanced concrete, but it is more fun 🛼 ) https://lnkd.in/eRVzYd8D

Who is into Serendipity!!! "Serendipity is an unplanned fortunate discovery. In 1754 Horace Walpole coined the word and described an amazing discovery as being “of that kind which I call Serendipity”." It has played a huge role in my life. Professor James Baker CEng FIET FRSA explains how a Serendipitous meeting after a lecture he gave has resulted in the formation of a super company who will assist in mitigating the Climate emergency Concretene We were delighted to be invited to carry out an MBA Consultancy Alan Beck, supervised by Rebecca Padgett, SFHEA. You can hear more in the VidPod. I will be featuring more of our Win Win success stories. Stay tuned. Alliance Manchester Business School

This is a great article on the state of play in #graphene from Mark Peplow in Science Magazine, ft. our Chief Technical Officer, Dr Craig Dawson. Really clear explanation of the differences in graphenic materials, the hype cycle, the challenges of production and how they relate to commercialisation of applications (also a very good sidebar on why the much-used line '200-times stronger than steel' should be taken with a big pinch of salt 😊 ) Thanks again for including us, Mark. A highly recommended read. Molten Ventures LocalGlobe Arup Black Swan Graphene Inc Graphene - The University of Manchester https://lnkd.in/dz_bKx7Q

We're thrilled to be able to announce £3m in Seed+ funding from Molten Ventures and LocalGlobe to help bring Concretene to market. Many thanks to all involved in the investment round, but especially to George Chalmers, CFA, Mohadeseh A., Robin Klein and Ferdinando Sigona for their invaluable advice and support. Lots of work ahead in the coming months but it's an amazing boost to us to have the support of VCs with such successful track records of tech investment. We look forward to working closely together to bring our technology to commercial fruition. Clinker, concrete and cement - what's the difference and why do they matter to global emissions? 🌎 You may know that concrete is the world's second-most consumed product worldwide (after potable water) but you may be less familiar with the lengthy process that goes into creating this essential material. Clinker, cement and concrete are not the same thing. Instead, they represent different stages of the concrete-making process: 🔸Clinker: Clinker is a mixture of limestone and minerals that have been heated in a kiln and transformed by the heat. It is the key binding agent in cement. 🔸Cement: Cement is used in construction to bind materials together by setting, hardening and adhering to them, making it a primary ingredient in concrete. 🔸Concrete: A composite material composed of aggregate bonded together by cement to form a durable building material. Going from clinker to concrete is an energy-intensive process, involving vast amounts of heat energy and emissions caused by transport. It's hardly surprising that concrete accounts for up to 8% of global emissions. So how can we decarbonise the concrete industry? 💭 Decreasing emissions from concrete will require significant changes to each aspect of the process. Dedicated innovators are already driving this change: Concretene is creating a graphene-enhanced admixture that uses nanomaterial technology to improve concrete performance and subsequently reduce the carbon footprint of the material. Concrete4Change is developing technology that permanently mineralises CO2 in concrete, effectively making concrete a carbon sink and turning one of the world's biggest emission problems into an emission solution. Biozeroc uses biotech and scalable process technology to create carbon-negative construction materials. Below we've created a useful summary of the concrete production process ⬇ #Concrete #ConstructionIndustry #ClimateTech

This week saw us welcome Concretene, Willmott Dixon, R2 Construction and Civic Engineers talking all things grapheme at our Northwich plant. Its wonderful for being given the opportunity to be involved with an innovative project and looking forward to see it all come together. #Breedon #Concrete #Concretene #Graphene #WillmottDixon #R2Construction #Construction #CivicEngineers
Many thanks to Susanna Willons, Osian Thomas and the rest of the team at Breedon's Northwich batching plant for hosting us yesterday, with project partners Willmott Dixon, Civic Engineers and R2 Construction. We had a good discussion about using graphene-enhanced admixtures in concrete in real-world environments and roughed out the schedule towards a demonstrator pour using Concretene later in the year (more detail to follow nearer the time). We also dodged the showers just long enough for a photo 📸. Thanks to all for the enthusiasm and can-do attitude! 😊 LocalGlobe Arup Black Swan Graphene Inc Graphene - The University of Manchester Breedon Group plc Alex McDermott Alan Beck #graphene #concrete #construction #carbon #emissions #netzero

Tech start-ups from across Britain are being encouraged to join a £1.7 billion innovation district in Manchester in what is being billed as the “last major regeneration” initiative in the city centre. Start-ups specialising in health innovation, advanced materials and manufacturing, digital and AI, biotechnology, and technology related to climate change are can apply for office and lab space in the 110,000 sq ft Renold Building. The rents are either heavily subsidised or free, thanks to grants from the Greater Manchester Investment Zone. “The idea is to provide a collaborative environment for early-stage businesses, with streamlined access into the university,” says Brad Topps of Bruntwood SciTech. Octopus Energy and Concretene have moved in nearby, along with Sustainable Ventures. https://lnkd.in/e8MPv69c #tech #regeneration #manchester
