Salary negotiations....how do you get the right balance? Twice in recent months we've seen offers delivered under candidate expectations, for them to be rejected, only for the company to come back and offer the initial asking salary! In plenty of these situations, a candidate may end up taking the role anyway, but it doesn't detract from a number of key points: Respect and Transparency: Offering a lower salary than what was discussed undermines the trust between a candidate and a potential employer. It's crucial to respect the candidate's expectations and have transparent discussions about budget constraints and role expectations. Impact on Morale: Starting a new job with a sense of being undervalued can significantly impact a candidate's morale and long-term commitment. Employees who feel respected and fairly compensated are more likely to be engaged and productive. Market Dynamics: Candidates often research and base their salary expectations on industry standards. Offering below these standards can reflect poorly on the company and deter top talent from considering future opportunities. Retention and Reputation: Companies that frequently underpay risk higher turnover rates. Additionally, a reputation for underpaying can spread, making it harder to attract skilled professionals in the long run. Building Strong Relationships: Fair salary negotiations are a cornerstone of building strong employer-employee relationships. When companies meet candidates’ salary expectations, it sets a positive tone for future interactions and fosters a collaborative work environment. Of course there are other considerations from an employers’ perspective; internal salaries, interview assessment and budget constraints. How do you ensure you get the balance right?
