We’re doing some final #geothermal reservoir testing at our United Downs site in #Cornwall. This is part of commissioning the power plant. You don’t normally see #geothermal #steam in the #UK and won’t actually see any when the power plant switches on to produce the first #geothermal #electricity ever in the #UK. So best not waste the opportunity. Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Department for Business and Trade

Latest News - South Crofty Tin Ingots The final limited edition South Crofty tin ingots are now finished and ready for release. As mentioned previously, these are traditional 28lb with two hot marks – the original ‘lamb & flag’ from the Cornish Tin Smelting Co Redruth, Seleggan, which shut down in 1931, and the ‘WHEAL JANE MINE BALDHU – SOUTH CROFTY TIN’ hot mark produced in 2024. Each ingot will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and a small jar of concentrate from the last day of production. Information for the certificates was supplied by senior management working at South Crofty and Wheal Jane in the years before closure, all of whom had actually been involved with the mines since the early/mid 1980s. Nine ingots are now available to purchase (POA). In addition, one will be auctioned for charity, and two will be retained at Wheal Jane for display purposes. The charity auction will be held by Lay’s of Penzance with proceeds going to the Children’s Hospice South West. The charity ingot will be the centrepiece of a “Mining History” auction which will take place in the summer with the date still to be confirmed.

Brilliant to see so many companies from the Geo-Resources sector in Cornwall supporting school events such as this one at Truro School! To secure a future workforce, the industry must take action now to spread the word about the opportunities and careers available. Well done to Cornish Lithium Plc, Geothermal Engineering Ltd, Cornish Metals Inc., Wardell Armstrong International (part of SLR) and GRINDING SOLUTIONS LIMITED for providing talks to the students and for everyone else getting involved from the sector.
Truro School’s Geology Department has launched a month-long ‘Earth Matters’ talk series, welcoming local businesses to share insights into their industries and career opportunities. The series began with a presentation by Ben Clitheroe from Cornish Metals, a mineral exploration and development company working towards reopening South Crofty, a historic Cornish tin mine. Next, pupils heard from Hugo Heard and Will McKenzie of Cornish Lithium, a company focused on securing a sustainable, ethical, and environmentally responsible lithium supply for the UK. The ‘Earth Matters’ series continues with upcoming talks from Wardell Armstrong, Geothermal Engineering Ltd, and GSL. Many of these companies will also be attending Truro School’s Careers Convention on Tuesday, 18 March, where students will have the chance to engage with industry professionals and explore career options further. The sessions have been well-attended so far, offering pupils and students a valuable glimpse into careers that connect with their Geology studies. Speakers have discussed roles in research, engineering, mapping, mineral extraction, and the integration of modern technology into mining. Key discussions have also explored sustainable mining, reducing the carbon footprint of precious metals, responsible material sourcing and energy transitions. The industry was highlighted as a growing sector, particularly in Cornwall, where rich resources present significant opportunities. Pathways into the field, such as apprenticeships, internships, job placements, and networking (both in-person and online) were recommended for those interested in pursuing a career in geology and mining. Showcasing #Cornwall’s Lithium Future at the Gunheath Discovery Centre Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming visitors from Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Department for Business and Trade, the Environment Agency, and Cornwall Council’s planning team to our #lithium project in mid-Cornwall. Our guests were the first to step inside the Gunheath Discovery Centre—our brand-new space overlooking Gunheath pit, where we can showcase our project, host discussions, and shelter from the unpredictable Cornish weather! We also toured our pilot plant, which has been producing battery-grade #lithiumcarbonate on a small scale for nearly three years. It was a great opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions about the future of lithium production in the UK. A big thank you to our visitors for their time and insights - #collaboration like this is key to driving progress! And thanks to the team including....Hanno Buys Edwin Berends Mark Hewson.
