Environmental Building Services Consultancy | Where buildings come alive.

About us

Climate change is without a doubt the greatest challenge we face in these times. When it comes to cutting carbon, current commercial building standards don’t go far enough. As it stands around 40-percent of energy-related greenhouse emissions come from buildings. We believe we can change that. Sustainability is part of our DNA. We are on a mission to build Zero-Carbon buildings that can sustain better lives for many generations. We are striving to raise the global standards of our industry whilst building better spaces and places for the world. Founded in 1978, CPW’s philosophy is one of innovation, creativity and technical expertise. Our experience as an industry leading mechanical, electrical and low carbon consultancy has ensured people and businesses realise their vision. With many offices in important locations around the country and over 230 world-leading experts offering a wide range of services, we deliver exemplary engineering solutions to national and international clients across a broad range of sectors. Let’s work together to bring buildings to life, minimising their impact on the world, whilst maximising the sense of enjoyment that people get from them. CPW - Where buildings come alive.

We are thrilled that this month Melissa Ballyn-Edwards, our Training and Development Coordinator, received an award for 'Excellence in Skills Partnerships' in the Skills West Midlands & Warwickshire Awards. Melissa was nominated by UCB and this award recognises outstanding work in collaboration between CPW and Further Education and training providers.    Melissa shares: “As a company, we are committed to nurturing and developing the next generation of sustainable engineers, and this wouldn’t be possible without the excellent work of our college partners. This award is testament to the great relationship we have with colleges like UCB and I’m so pleased to see this recognised! Thank you to Deb Bunce, Rosa Wells and Emma S. for the continued opportunities to collaborate with UCB, I am excited to work with you further in the future.”   The event brought together local business leaders, key business advisory and college and training providers, to highlight the vital role of skills development in driving economic prosperity, and was attended by Minister for Skills Jacqui Smith and West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker. If you can’t beat em… I usually take the Train to Oxford, but decided to hop on my £20 lockdown purchase (I’m not a cyclist) to get about the city today. A quick pedal to Osney Mead allowed for an engaging meeting with Jesús Lizana from The ZERO Institute - University of Oxford and CPW colleague Hannah Kissick discussing all things #netzero. I enjoyed the alternative travel today and now the weathers improving it won’t be the last time. Finally let’s hope we can get the electrical infrastructure upgraded in order to achieve the transition to net zero. #decarbonsiation #netzero #weareCPW

Celebrating Employer Excellence in Skills Development! A huge congratulations to CPW, a key employer partner of University College Birmingham, for receiving the Employer Recognition Award at the one-year anniversary celebration of Skills West Midlands & Warwickshire. This well-deserved recognition highlights CPW’s outstanding commitment to skills development, student progression, and workforce growth in the region. Their dedication to nurturing talent and providing hands-on industry experience sets a benchmark for employer engagement in education. The award was presented at a fantastic event attended by Minister Jacqui Smith, West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker, and leading voices from education and business. The celebration marked a year of impactful collaboration between further education colleges, training providers, and industry partners—all working together to bridge skills gaps and strengthen workforce development. It has been brilliant to work with Melissa Ballyn-Edwards on developing new apprenticeship training to support the next generation of Building Services Engineers. Her commitment is not only benefiting CPW but also supporting other regional employers in recruiting and training apprentices who are now able to enrol at University College Birmingham. A special mention to Emma S., Executive Director FE Quality Enhancement, who joined Melissa at the event to celebrate this achievement and Deb Bunce who has worked closely with Melissa and CPW to develop the new apprenticeships. A brilliant event, led and co-ordinated by Suzie Branch-Haddow - thank you! Employer-informed learning is key to addressing workforce challenges, and this award is a testament to the power of strong industry-education partnerships. #SkillsDevelopment #Apprenticeships #EmployerRecognition #FE #Education #WestMidlands #WorkforceGrowth #Collaboration

Recently we sat down with Director and Birmingham City Centre Lead, Antonios Agapakis, to get his take on the world of construction, and Higher Education projects, as part of our Education Campaign.  Opening up about life as an engineer, and navigating challenges of an ever-evolving industry, Antonios shares: “I don’t let things weigh too heavy on me, and I like to take a glass-half-full approach to life. I try to bring that same energy into my work as much as I can. It’s important to find joy in what you do and appreciate what you have—that’s why I’m so passionate.” His advice for aspiring engineers? “Stay curious, stay flexible, and never stop learning. Engineering is constantly evolving, and the ability to adapt is what sets great engineers apart.” Read his full interview here: https://lnkd.in/eNNsf3NF #ConstructionCareers #MEPengineering #HigherEducation #Birmingham #BuildingDesign #Buildingthefuture #WeAreCPW

Great to discuss such a crucial topic! A big thanks to everyone who attended and to the HAWCE team for organising a fantastic evening 👏 "Discussions around embodied carbon really highlighted the lack of awareness around this element of a building’s life-cycle. The perception is the focus remains on operational energy which as an industry has massively reduced over the years by enhancing the building envelope, reducing the base loads and specifying highly efficient plant. "Embodied carbon is now the main contributor when considering the life-cycle of a building. Early project engagement relating to embodied carbon and material selection is crucial to reducing carbon on construction projects," shared our Associate, Sean-Paul Tester. We hope you enjoyed the session and was able to gain some useful insights! We're delighted to share that the Wadworth Brewery site development in Devizes, Wiltshire, has received planning permission! 🎉 This project will transform the site into a new residential development featuring a mix of apartment blocks and private houses, complete with studios and garden spaces. Working alongside Backhouse Construction and the project team, CPW was brought in to develop an exterior lighting concept. Our design covers pedestrian walkways, building entrances, parking areas, roadways, and public amenity spaces—all aligned with the project’s sustainability goals. We also conducted a sensitivity study to ensure there was no light spill onto the adjacent canal. Excited to see this project take shape! Image credits: Backhouse  Need support with Lighting Design?
