MEPC Limited has announced the completion of Nebula, a cutting-edge £40M research and development project at Milton Park (Oxfordshire). The seven workspaces of just under 80,000 sq ft prioritises sustainability, using glulam (glued laminated) timber frames instead of steel - saving 686 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to 196 return flights to Hong Kong ✈️ Ridge was appointed from the outset, providing Project & Cost Management, MEP, Principal Designer, and Geospatial services. Our team navigated design options, sustainability considerations, and Milton Park’s Local Development Order process, ensuring a smooth delivery. What does the future of office spaces in London look like? Austin Wikner, Building Services Engineering Partner at Ridge, is about to play a part in shaping it 👏 Austin has been selected to join the newly formed British Council for Offices London Regional Committee, where his expertise in building services, sustainability, and workplace design will help drive discussions around energy efficiency, retrofits, and creating workplaces that meet the needs of future generations. With so many buildings in London needing to undergo significant retrofit and refurbishment - the formation of this committee comes at a pivotal time. The BCO has always been a leader in promoting best practices in the commercial office sector. This new regional committee will help spark important conversations, share ideas, and influence how offices are designed, developed, and managed in the years ahead. Decarbonising our schools is a huge challenge - but also a huge opportunity 🌳 With new government funding comes ambitious Net Zero targets, meaning new school buildings must be fossil fuel-free and highly energy-efficient, while refurbishments need to show significant carbon reductions. So, how can schools get there? It all starts with the building itself. A "fabric-first" approach means maximising insulation, airtightness, and glazing before tackling energy systems. The more efficient the building, the less energy it needs. Next comes the transition from gas to electricity. Heat pumps are the preferred solution, but with electricity still more expensive than gas, we help schools plan phased, cost-effective decarbonisation strategies. In some cases, direct electric boilers or hybrid systems might be a viable interim step. Renewable energy is another key tool ☀️ Solar panels can significantly reduce energy bills - often paying for themselves within a few years. And beyond the tech, behaviour matters too. Teaching staff and students how to use energy wisely, combined with post-occupancy evaluations, ensures schools perform as efficiently in practice as they do on paper. An exciting new development is coming to Hemel Hempstead. We’re providing cost management services on the scheme, helping to shape a development that will set a new benchmark for housing in the UK. Last year we had the pleasure of being involved in the creation of a new office and trauma space for the Helen Bamber Foundation, an organisation that supports survivors of trafficking and torture. A former mixed-used space, their new 25,000 sq ft space in London was repurposed into a safe and supportive environment. We provided project management services on this project, which included including carrying out due diligence, submitting planning applications, and leading lease negotiations. The building is now home to a mix of clinician and counselling rooms, family areas, and break-out spaces, all carefully designed to foster a sense of security and healing. In collaboration with the wider supply chain, we were also able to secure generous donations for the fit-out, from free lighting to reclaimed carpets, creating a unique mix of new and recycled elements that reflect the charitable spirit of the project. It’s been great to play a small part in supporting such important work.
