CSA Away Day in London - a great day! 🎉😊 Thank goodness for the sunshine last Friday! We had a fantastic day on the Thames and at Monopoly Lifesized - lovely for all the offices to meet up and to relax and have some fun together! A big shout out to Greg Collins for providing the traditional CSA quiz. Also a notable day for Jo Huggins for whom this will be the last CSA Away Day - she retires at Christmas after 21 years with our huge thanks and good wishes for the future. #greatplacetowork #havingfun

Get ready with Preliminary Ecological Appraisals - the first stage in the ecological site assessment process where potential constraints and opportunities are identified. CSA Environmental always recommend undertaking a PEA at the outset to inform development proposals and the scope of any further survey requirements / identify seasonal constraints. The autumn period is a great time to get ahead of the curve and scope any seasonal protected species work for coming winter, spring and summer seasons to ensure that key survey windows are not missed. 🌲🦇 🌲 Woodland Roosts🌲🦇 🌲 - CSA Environmental Ecologists Nancy Inman, Jodie Van Gramberg and Lucy Moorhouse recently enjoyed attending the Bat Conservation Trust's National Bat Conference reporting back on attending interesting workshops on the woodland roost resource concept, bats in landscaping and bat call analysis.   Particularly of interest was the 'Understanding and applying the woodland roost concept' talk from Dr Ian Davidson-Watts, who we have worked with on various projects over the years. Useful points on woodland roosts: 🦇Areas of woodland can provide roost sites for some of our rarest bat species, such as Bechstein’s, Barbastelle and Natterer’s bats. 🦇Bats have been found to transition between roosts in response to shifts in environmental conditions throughout the year, even during periods of hibernation. This means that ‘traditional surveys’ (e.g. focused monitoring / roost emergence surveys) may miss roosts that form part of a roost complex. 🦇The woodland roost resource concept helps us understand the importance of not just individual features within trees for supporting roosting bats, but the entire woodland habitat as a whole. 🦇Research on how bats are using woodland habitats, has helped inform new approaches to woodland habitat resource assessment and ways of identifying important roost sites. The use of ‘Advanced Level Bat Survey Techniques (ALBST) is being promoted under the ‘new’ (September 2023) BCT Bat Survey guidelines, where impacts to larger areas of woodland are anticipated. ALBST techniques such as trapping and radio-tagging can help to identify species and roost sites across larger areas of woodland. We can apply this knowledge to projects when evaluating the importance of woodland habitats, and to inform appropriate mitigation and enhancements. NEWS 🗞 - CSA Environmental are pleased to announce that planning permission has been granted for Porritt Care Village in Ramsbottom for our client Millennium Care UK Group   A complex Green Belt planning submission (which required very special circumstances) driven by a motive and purpose to design a unique and special place for people with dementia to thrive in at Porritt Care Village.    CSA Environmental were instructed to provide landscape services, including LVIA and Green Belt Assessment, and landscape design in the form of a landscape strategy and design statement for the project. See slides below for more details on how we supported this project. VACANCIES: Assistant Ecologists - A fantastic opportunity to join our busy and expanding team of 35+ ecologists across our offices in Ashwell (Hertfordshire), Brighton (East Sussex), Basingstoke (Hampshire) and Tewkesbury (Gloucestershire). No two days are the same at CSA, with our variety of projects and clients offering diverse tasks and opportunities. Alongside assisting and learning from our friendly and expert team, your key roles and day-to-day tasks are likely to include: 🦎 Assisting with UK Habitat Classification surveys and protected species surveys for a range of species, including badgers, bats, dormice, otter, water vole, birds, reptiles and great crested newts, amongst others. 🦇Assisting and coordinating survey work, including preparation and maintenance of latest survey equipment and technology (e.g. infra-red cameras, bat detectors). 💻 Completing desktop studies, obtaining and interpreting biological records and reviewing online mapping/data sources. 🌳 Use of QGIS and other graphics packages to prepare high quality technical drawings such as Habitats Plans and Biodiversity Enhancement Plans and to measure habitat areas for use with the Biodiversity Net Gain metric. 🖥 Assist with the preparation of technical reports including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Impact Assessments, Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments, protected species survey reports, mitigation strategies, Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans and more.
