Connecting people and place through landscape
About us
At LDA Design, we make great places and shape the world around us for the better. We do this by connecting people and place through landscape. The origin of the word landscape is to create a place where people belong. We follow the principles of ‘first life, then spaces, then buildings’. Whether we are designing a new district, restoring a park or regenerating an estate, we start with what people want and need. LDA Design led the final landscape masterplan and detailed design for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, one of Europe’s most successful new parklands. We have designed and delivered some of the UK’s most challenging city centre public realm projects, including London’s Battersea Power Station, Stratford Waterfront and Strand Aldwych. This work includes George Street in Edinburgh and the transformation of public realm in Newcastle City Centre. We have developed a public realm strategy for Liverpool that will shape the centre for the next 25 years. Our award-winning partnership with Camden has transformed West End streets, carving out new green space and creating a healthier, safer, and more pleasant experience for pedestrians and cyclists. The climate crisis is the biggest challenge of our generation. As the UK weans itself off fossil fuels, a substantially increased demand for a reliable and secure mix of low-carbon energy lies ahead. Our long-standing commitment to renewable energy, since its infancy, places us at the forefront to help clients respond to this global challenge. Our experience, together with our creativity and practical appreciation of issues, allow us to provide robust advice and leadership that reflects an understanding of commerciality, risk and opportunity. We helped secure consent for Hornsea Three, which will be the UK’s largest offshore windfarm. LDA Design is proud to be 100% employee owned. We are landscape architects, urban designers, planners, environmental planners and EIA coordinators.

Ending a busy day with really good news – LDA Design’s #planning team has helped to secure the go ahead for Kitland Solar ☀️ in North #Somerset. The 88-hectare Statkraft UK scheme includes a 39.9MW #solar array – enough to power the equivalent of 13,250 homes a year. Plus, a #battery #energy storage system and grid connection. Close to the stunning Mendip Hills, the proposals required a particularly sensitive #landscape and ecological design response. LDA Design worked closely with North Somerset Council and the local #community to ensure a positive outcome. This included reorganising public rights of way and changing layout and planting in response to feedback. The site is also within the consultation zone for the North Somerset and Mendip Bats Special Area of Conservation. The strategy for greater and lesser horseshoe bat mitigation involved moving cattle to a large, arable field and then splitting it up into five separate cattle grazing fields, as well as creating new hedgerows, foraging habitats and cattle shelters providing the bats with a steady supply of tasty dung beetles. The public access and landscape enhancements across the site are designed to improve access to nature and connectivity between the adjacent villages. The scheme has a 94% biodiversity net gain figure for habitats. Benefits include: 🚶♀️ 3,778m of net additional definitive public rights of way 🌻 Over 17ha of wildflower planting 🌳 5.8ha of new woodland 🌿 5,750m of new hedgerows 💧 Four new ponds and the reinstatement of three former ponds 🐸🍏 A new wetland and community orchard A great result. A milestone moment for Legal & General’s Bristol Temple Island which has gone in for #planning. With designs by Zaha Hadid Architects and LDA Design, this will be a fantastic new addition to the city. The proposed #regeneration will turn a derelict former diesel depot into a lively neighbourhood, with 520 new homes, targeting 40% affordable, plus two new office buildings (aiming for BREEAM Outstanding), retail, a hotel and conference facilities - all set in an intuitive #landscape shaped by the area’s riparian characteristics. As #LDADesign director and project lead Catherine Birkin explains, “We have rooted our design thinking in the specificity of its location by the River Avon, and the ways in which the rhythmic presence of the tidal range informs a powerful sense of place. Twice a day, mesmerising textures and shapes are exposed in the mud banks and these have helped direct the circulation, planting, and materiality.” Well done to all involved, including from LDA Design Catherine Birkin Jemma Hall Lewis Turner and all the #Bristol studio. https://lnkd.in/ebFUfQui Full project team here ➡️ Potter Raper Zaha Hadid Architects LDA Design Avison Young Hoare Lea Buro Happold Currie & Brown Cast Consultancy Pegasus Group Nicholas Pearson Associates DPR CSquared Savills 📸 bloomimages #Bristol #BetterCity #BristolTempleIsland #Regeneration #NewNeighbourhood #Biodiversity #RiverAvon #Placemaking #Developement #UrbanDesign #Architecture #LandscapeArchitecture

Great to see that Reflect, the pavilion created and named by the young #placemakers of Fitzrovia Youth in Action with MATT+FIONA, and the new National Temperance Hospital Gardens by LDA Design are now open. What a joyful project this has been and brilliant working with #FYA, MATT+FIONA, HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd, Integral Engineering Design and Mace to bring to life this new #meanwhile #community space, on the site of a former HS2 construction yard near #Euston station. Well done to all involved, including LDA Design's Dafydd Warburton and Manfredi Pedone, FYA's Eleanor Rudd and M+F's Jonathan Shmulevitch and George Pope. We’re looking forward to seeing more events in the space as the days lengthen and things warm up a bit! But for now 👏 Huge thanks for 📸 to Nick Turpin and Jonathan Shmulevitch / MATT+FIONA (3 and 8). #London #EustonStation #CommunityGardens #HS2 #Community #YoungDesigners #CoCreation #FitzroviaYouthinAction #GreenSpace #BetterCity #PlayfulCity

Ending the week with a lovely #SketchFriday and a watercolour masterclass courtesy of urban designer and masterplanner, Evgeny Didorenko. Evgeny, who is based in our #London studio and works on many of LDA Design's #international projects, loves to use splashes of colour and #watercolour techniques to make the connection between #architecture and #landscape, and to illustrate how people use and enjoy spaces. He finds that sketching helps give a real sense of a place, making it come alive and with any imperfections only adding to the appeal and reflecting the imperfect #nature of life. Joyful work. #SketchFriday #painting #design #urbandesign #landscapearchitecture #architecture #placemaking #studioculture #employeeownership #inclusion #collaboration

So, this week, we’ve had fun marking Lunar New Year. We’ve wished each other good health and happiness, celebrated the new moon, painted, feasted on delicious hot pots, and welcomed in the year of the snake 🐍. Thank you to all those who put the hard work into making these lovely things happen. We’d be lost without you. You make LDA Design a very special place to work. #LunarNewYear #ChineseNewYear #EmployeeOwnership #Inclusion #Collaboration #WorkingTogether #TeamWork #Bristol #Cambridge #Exeter #Glasgow #London #Manchester #Oxford #Peterborough

👀 What a first life approach is all about. Exciting to see the final stages of the transformation of Beresford Square and Powis Street in #Woolwich as planting goes in. Watch this space. We'll keep you in the know. Well done, team 👏 Royal Borough of Greenwich LDA Design - Cannon Ivers Naomi Rosser Tom McCreesh - Michael Grubb Studio Elite Landscapes Ltd Studio Bosk Ltd Robin Tacchi Plants Hadron Consulting (Project Management) Civic Engineers Marshalls plc Fountains Direct Ltd. #landscapearchitecture #landscapedesign #landscape #betterplaces #firstlife #design #placemaking
The transformation of Beresford Square and Powis St is one step closer to completion as the plants are set out, planted and start to put down roots. This is always an exciting time in a project. The presence of live matter, nature, and the knowledge of unseen processes taking place connects deeper. There’s also the anticipation of what’s to come once Spring arrives. What this spaces as the final elements are completed and the space opens to the public. How wonderful is this?! 'Reflect' ready for action - a new pavilion created by the young #placemakers of Fitzrovia Youth in Action. It has been our privilege to work with these brilliant young designers, and MATT+FIONA, Integral Engineering Design, HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd and Mace to create a fun meanwhile #community green space, the National Temperance Hospital Garden, in freed up space near #Euston Station and with 'Reflect' the focal point. Hats off to everyone, including LDA Design's Dafydd Warburton and Manfredi Pedone, and M+F's Jonathan Shmulevitch but especially FYA's awesome #placemakers. #London #EustonStation #CommunityGardens #Meanwhile #HS2 #FitzroviaYouthinAction #FYA #GreenSpace #BetterCity #GreenCity #PlayfulCity
If you have been down Hampstead Road in Camden lately, you may have noticed a new addition to the skyline… Reflect is the result of a year-long engagement process with young people in Camden, culminating in Fitzrovia Youth in Action’s Young Placemakers coming together last August to build the panels that they designed and which make up the top half of the structure. Now the result of their work is here: a six-metre tall beacon demonstrating young people’s power in shaping their neighbourhoods. The play and performance structure is the focal point of the National Temperance Hospital Garden, a meanwhile green space established on a former HS2 construction compound. Mirrored surfaces dramatically catch the sun and the surrounding area, elevating the pavilion to the status of landmark. Above the stage, the array of overhead mirrors creates intriguing and unusual visual effects, reflecting performers onstage back to the audience – earning the structure its title, ‘Reflect’, which was chosen by the team of Young Placemakers that conceived and built it. The project has been a joyful collaboration between the amazing Young Placemakers from FYA, LDA Design who landscaped the surrounding garden, Integral Engineering Design, HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd, Mace and us at MATT+FIONA, led by our Programme Manager Jon Shmulevitch. We are so excited that Reflect and the garden are now open to for the public to enjoy, providing a new green and playful space to the local community! #Flood defences that will not only make #Southsea safer but also a better, more inviting and more playful place for local residents and visitors. This is flood protection and climate resilience as destination and #infrastructure that changes lives and benefits #nature. A whopping 12-pages on the transformation of Southsea seafront by Kimberley France for The Developer and Festival of Place and featuring an interview with LDA Design's Kirsty Barker. As Kirsty says, "It makes the years of hard work worthwhile when you finally see people using the spaces as we envisaged!" This is a massive project and we can't wait for more phases to complete. Well done to all the teams from Royal HaskoningDHV, LDA Design (Kirsty Barker Sophie Thompson Oliver Haring Dimitris Adamidis), Coastal Partners, VolkerStevin, Wessex Archaeology, Portsmouth City Council, Southsea Coastal Scheme and many more. #Portsmouth #SouthseaCoastal #FloodDefences #CoastalProtection #BetterSeaside #Placemaking #LandscapeDesign #LandscapeArchitecture #Infrastructure #ClimateAction #ClimateResilience
The Southsea Coastal Scheme is the UK’s largest local-authority-led sea defence scheme, covering 4.5km around Portsmouth, protecting people and businesses, and delivering new public space. Chris Koster, the scheme’s programme manager, highlights it as “one of the biggest community schemes I’ve ever worked on.” Written by Kimberley France Continue reading: https://bit.ly/3PV8GY0
