"Recent storms show that society has not adapted to worsening climate conditions. Countries must build more resilient infrastructure to adapt to a more turbulent climate. This will be costly, but far less costly than doing nothing." Professor Hayley Fowler, from our Newcastle University team, emphasises that climate change is making storms like Éowyn “more intense, with greater damages.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/g9DYQE-i

"The North East is uniquely positioned to lead in the transport transformation with a rich history of innovation and a strong industrial base. By levering our strengths and working together, we can create a model for more sustainable transport that could be replicated and used across the UK." - Stephanie Glendinning, Newcastle University In November, our North East England Transport Summit brought together 80 representatives from industry, civic authority, and academia from across the region to explore and discuss the transition to a decarbonised and resilient transport system in the North East. An exciting day packed full of important knowledge sharing, there was a real sense of collaboration for action amongst delegates. Join our mailing list to find out about more #DAReNationalHub events.

Last week the #DAReNationalHub hosted a workshop with Hub partners Sustrans to explore the role of data in planning and managing #ActiveTravel infrastructure. Participants included Active Travel England, The Alan Turing Institute, The North East Combined Authority, TADU, Arup, and five NE local authorities. Amongst other key insights that emerged during the workshop, participants agreed that #data, accessible tools, partnerships, and cross-sector collaboration are key to sustainable transport. "While the development of new #infrastructure and technology can help relieve road congestion, I also realised that addressing these challenges requires a deeper understanding of ‘people.’ People remain the fundamental component of society, and their choices, habits, and interactions with environment and technology are key to creating #sustainable and effective #transportation systems." #DAReNationalHub Researcher, Dr Qin Zhang from the University of Cambridge, shares why understanding travel behaviour is key to sustainable transport, how agent-based modelling can aid understanding, and advice for fellow researchers. We need more data about active travel to better understand its benefits, identify barriers, and develop effective policies and infrastructure that encourage more people to walk, cycle, and use other sustainable modes of transportation. In collaboration with Hub partner Sustrans, the DARe Hub hosted an active travel data workshop with representatives of North East local government and the data research community, including Active Travel England, The Alan Turing Institute, The North East Combined Authority, and TADU. During the workshop, participants discussed the current availability, nature, and use of active travel data in the North East, exploring how this data is applied in decision and planning making processes, along with current limitations. The group worked to identify the potential means by which active travel data availability and access can be improved to make for a more data-driven approach in future infrastructure provision. To finish the workshop, participants held a whole group discussion on how we can use data collaboratively to better inform the decisions we’re all taking to shape our transport system for active travel. Workshops like this are crucial to the DARe Hub's work, helping to strengthen collaboration amongst our partners and inform and enhance our research programme. #ActiveTravel #Data #Sustainability #Transport #Infrastructure #DAReNationalHub

"Transport analytics company Inrix said drivers in the capital spent 101 hours sitting in traffic in 2024, a 2% increase from the previous year. [...] London was ranked the fifth most congested city in the world, with Istanbul in first place. Across the UK, the average driver spent 62 hours in congestion last year, an increase of one hour from 2023."
