Excited to announce that our paper titled ' Strategic assessment of bridge susceptibility to scour' has now been published in the Journal of Reliability Engineering and Systems Safety. Scour-induced bridge failures are a global concern, exacerbated by infrequent inspections and insufficient consideration of hydro-geological factors, especially under climate change. We propose a comprehensive scour risk management framework that employs British Geological Survey GeoScour GIS datasets to evaluate weighted factors affecting bridge scour formation. Applied to the railway network in southeast England, the study maps structural, riverine, geological, and flood risks, aiding asset managers to prioritise bridges needing detailed inspections. Our CEM12 have successfully presented their research findings at our 12th Annual Construction Engineering Masters Dissertation Conference today. Congratulations to all the presenters for their exceptional work! The discussions covered fascinating topics such as applying sports science in construction, promoting STEM fields among schoolgirls and the impact of hybrid working on knowledge dissemination in engineering design. Dr Gavin Davies, CEM Course Director, opened the conference and stated, "We need to address two specific issues. First, we need our north star to be broad societal needs for the longer term. Secondly, we must address challenges in integrated ways. This means joining up across industry siloes, governments and the private sector. This means system thinking. This means focusing on outcomes first, not inputs." The conference serves as a platform to explore innovative research outcomes and address pressing challenges within the construction industry. It provides invaluable opportunities for knowledge exchange, professional connections and meaningful relationships. My number one hope for the next few crucial years is that we will all start to work together to tackle the key issues facing us using Systems Thinking and a truly inclusive and collaborative approach to policy and decision making. The Government Office for Science has published some really good resources to help us all understand the concepts of decision making in complex systems and how important strategic stakeholder engagement really is - take a look and share: https://lnkd.in/eauw2EP2 ‘Using systems thinking means understanding that we and our work sit within a system, not outside of it. If we change one part of a system we are likely to indirectly, or directly, affect another part. Thus we must identify and engage with others in the system that our area sits in and build a shared understanding of our system to ensure the changes we make are coherent and likely to succeed. For all the tools in this toolkit we recommend engaging as widely across the system as you can. We use the term collaborating community in both this document and The Systems Thinking Journey to describe the group of stakeholders from across the system whose diverse perspectives should be included in your project wherever possible. Tight deadlines can limit your ability to do this, but engagement with a system need not be limited to large workshops – you can still test understanding with your collaborating community via other methods such as emails or calls, still enabling you to incorporate their perspectives into your work and build buy-in to your approach’ #stakeholderengagement #collaboration #engineering #systemsthinking
