Two papers led by DERI researchers will be presented at the International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging, to be held in Athens from 27-30 May, 2024 https://lnkd.in/egTKfwbA. The first paper, "Crop and Couple: Cardiac Image Segmentation Using Interlinked Specialist Networks," with authors Abbas Khan, Muhammad Asad, PhD, Martin Benning, Caroline Roney, and Greg Slabaugh introduces a novel conditional neural network architecture that performs cardiac MR image segmentation using the MR machine make and model. The second paper, "FOAA: Flattened Outer Arithmetic Attention For Multimodal Tumor Classification," with authors Omnia Alwazzan, ioannis Patras, Greg Slabaugh introduces a general purpose multi-modal AI pipeline that fuses multiple modalities to make a more precise diagnosis, in this case tumour classification. Did you know the Earth stores carbon dioxide (CO2) in surprising places? A new study, led by scientists at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and with key contributions from Professor Cedric John's team at Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI), found a hidden way CO2 gets "locked away" deep beneath the ocean. Transform faults, where tectonic plates slide past each other, were thought to be inactive. Professor John's team used clumped isotope data to unlock the secret: rocks within these faults react with CO2-rich hydrothermal fluids, essentially locking away carbon dioxide and potentially impacting global climate. This is exciting news because it helps us better understand how our planet naturally manages CO2. Professor John adds: "This research could pave the way for new approaches in carbon capture and storage, contributing to reducing greenhouse gases."

“AI at a Turning Point: How can we Create Equitable AI Governance Futures” is currently taking place at Queen Mary University London. The programme was organised by DERI Fellow Prof David Leslie, and hosted in QM's Mile End campus, in partnership with the Alan Turing Institute, the AI PPG, and the Big Innovation Centre, the event aligns with the UK’s first AI Safety Summit. It will include a number of talks and panel discussions, and a Keynote from Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director General of UNESCO.
