Elizabeth Anderson, CEO of the Digital Poverty Alliance, has contributed an op-ed to the Daily Express addressing the findings of EY’s recent report on the potential shift to internet-only TV. In the article, "Change to internet-only TV could cost 4.3 million households £218, report warns," she highlights the risks this move poses to vulnerable groups, including older people, lower-income households, and rural communities, who depend on terrestrial TV for essential information, entertainment, and social connection. Elizabeth outlines how moving to an internet-only model would impose additional costs on millions of households, potentially widening the digital divide. She advocates for maintaining the current hybrid TV model, which ensures access for all without pushing households into the financial strain of high-speed broadband. #digitalhealth has become normalised in many parts of the world and for many people. However is access equal for all? As new and innovative services are made available to citizens how do we address the issue of inequity? Empowering or Excluding? What’s the impact of #technology on public health? Globally there are still major differences in access to #healthcare and the global workforce challenge puts an even greater emphasis on using #technology. BMJ will be hosting Future Health at BMJ Group in a few weeks time when we’ll be discussing these issues in much more depth! Join us for this webinar on 22 October where I will be joined by Keyrellous Adib from the World Health Organization, Elizabeth Anderson from Digital Poverty Alliance, Dr Stefan Buttigieg MD MSPH MSc Ministry of Health, Malta and Adam Abbs from Hurdle. Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/e9xXEpGN We’ll be discussing #inequity in digital health, the advent of digital diagnostics, the issue of #digitalpoverty and the policy implications across Europe. Colleagues will be joining me from a range of locations including Spain, Malta, Denmark and the U.K. as we discuss this new #publichealth issue. #BMJFutureHealth #BMJFutureHealthWebinar #HealthTechWebinar #AIinHealthCare #publichealth

As #GetOnlineWeek highlights the importance of digital inclusion across the #UK, the Digital Poverty Alliance is committed to making a lasting impact through our key initiatives. Our Tech4YoungCarers Programme, recently launched in partnership with East of England Broadband Network (E2BN), is transforming the lives of young carers in Fenland, South Cambridgeshire, and Huntingdonshire. These young carers, who juggle education and caregiving, now have access to laptops, internet connectivity, and digital skills training, empowering them to succeed in a digital-first world. Meanwhile, our Tech4Youth Programme, a partnership with Macquarie Group Foundation and Voneus, is actively expanding across Solway and surrounding communities, equipping young people with digital resources and workshops to enhance their education and career prospects. In Kensington and Chelsea, we have launched a new device donation scheme that will soon begin refurbishing and redistributing unused devices to families in need, addressing the growing digital divide and ensuring no one is excluded from the opportunities the digital world offers. Through these initiatives, we are making a tangible difference in communities and driving forward our vision of a more digitally inclusive UK. #EndDigitalPoverty

Over 12,000 residents in Kensington & Chelsea are without access to the technology that is essential for education, employment, and everyday life. As the world increasingly shifts online, the need for a practical solution to this issue has never been more urgent. In response, the Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) has partnered with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to launch a device donation programme. We are calling on residents and businesses to donate their used laptops, mobile phones, and tablets. These devices will be refurbished and distributed to those who need them most, ensuring that no one is left behind in our digital world.
