Our Global Container Port Throughput Index increased 3.3% MoM in June 2024, reaching 118.5 points, 5.5% higher YoY. The rolling 12-month average growth rate for global port handling also rose to 4.4% in June. According to Drewry’s Nowcast model, which takes into account the capacity and duration of container vessel calls at over 190 ports, the Global Port Throughput Index is anticipated to have fallen 4.1% MoM in July to 113.7 points. Drewry expects 2024 to be the second highest year on record for dry freight container manufacturing, driven by the all-time high quarterly production in 2Q24, followed by July’s output of dry freight and reefer containers exceeding 850,000 teu from factories in China. For the week ending 16 August, all Drewry Indices showed an increase. Crude and Port Indices were top performers, increasing by 4.8% and 4.5% respectively. The Crude Equity Index grew due to increased spot charter rates for VLCC vessels. LPG, Dry Bulk and Container rose 3.3%, 2.6% and 2.2% respectively.
