I’m pleased to share that I have started as a Trainee Investment Consultant at First Actuarial. I am looking forward to applying my mathematical and economics knowledge to the real world and developing professionally with such a welcoming company. This week I have also submitted my MSc Economics dissertation, signalling the end of my time at Durham University. The piece investigates quantitative easing's original (but forgotten) purpose of stimulating business investment in the non-financial sector, and has led me down some very interesting and unorthodox routes regarding monetary policy and the role of the financial sector. Durham will hold many special memories including representing the newly-created Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition team and the development opportunities offered by the Durham University Student Leadership Framework. Good luck to all the brilliant people I've met in their future endeavours, and thanks for making it such a good year!

🌟 Scholar Spotlight: Oliver Pugh 🌟 Meet Oliver Pugh, a #LaidlawScholar at Durham University, who is revolutionising the way we think about sustainable energy storage by transforming potato peelings into electrochemical supercapacitors! 🥔🔋 In a world facing escalating energy demands and environmental challenges, Oliver’s research explores how food waste, like Maris Piper potato skins, can be transformed into materials for advanced energy storage devices. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, these eco-friendly alternatives can endure millions of charge cycles and operate in harsh environments, making them perfect for renewable energy sources like solar and wind. In addition to his research, Oliver has recently been selected as a delegate for the 2024 SUAD Youth COP, where he will join high-level discussions on critical issues like the Just Energy Transition and Biodiversity. Representing a coalition of 25 diverse #UNFCCC member states, Oliver is set to contribute to an inclusive and solutions-oriented dialogue on today’s pressing climate challenges. 🌱⚡Learn more about Oliver’s exciting journey and his vision for a cleaner, more sustainable world in his full spotlight: https://lnkd.in/eB_z_jqT #Innovation #GreenEnergy #Research #CircularEconomy #Leadership #EnergySolutions #FutureOfEnergy

Biological Sciences Student | Laidlaw Scholar | Respiratory Immunology Research Intern @ GSK

I’m thrilled to share some reflections on my summer internship with makesense americas in Peru as part of Laidlaw Foundation's Leadership in Action project. This was a life-changing journey that deepened my understanding of what it means to be a global citizen. 🌍 During these 6 weeks, I had the opportunity to lead a diverse group of volunteers alongside Phoebe Woo for Killa Natural Ancestral, an inspiring organization founded by Araceli Luna Dominguez dedicated to preserving indigenous heritage, creating eco-friendly products, and empowering native women. Killa's mission focuses on revitalizing traditional practices and providing sustainable economic opportunities for indigenous women, ensuring that their knowledge and skills are celebrated and integrated into the modern economy. My role was to create content, help market Killa’s products, personalize the brand, and make the stories behind the indigenous artisans heard. I conducted interviews with native artisans, capturing and sharing their unique stories. 🎥✨ Throughout the internship, I gained experience in content creation, digital marketing, and brand storytelling. These skills were essential in crafting narratives that resonated with audiences and effectively communicated the rich cultural heritage behind Killa’s products. I also learned project management skills, sustainable development practices, and to engage with communities in a way that is both impactful and respectful. Interpersonally, I learned the importance of empathy, conflict resolution, adaptability, collective impact, and cultural humility. Conducting interviews with the artisans taught me how to approach sensitive subjects with care and how to authentically share their stories. Leading a team with diverse backgrounds and perspectives was both challenging and rewarding, teaching me how to navigate and celebrate differences while working towards a common goal. 🤝🌱 The relationships I built during this time have been one of the most valuable aspects of the experience. I had the privilege of working closely with our MakeSense mentors, Paula Bernasconi Vargas and Judith Huamani Cadenas (Ella/She/Her), who were like elder sisters to us throughout our journey! Their exceptional mentorship was crucial to our success, making our time in Peru impactful and deeply rewarding professionally and personally. I was also lucky to build beautiful friendships with fellow Laidlaw Scholars from around the world, some of the most amazing people I’ve met! This experience has created memories that I will cherish for life. The bonds we’ve built are a testament to the power of collaboration and shared purpose. I look forward to seeing how we will all continue to grow and make an impact in our respective fields. 💬❤️ I am incredibly grateful to MakeSense and the Laidlaw Foundation. The lessons I’ve learned and the memories I’ve made will stay with me as I continue to grow and seek opportunities to make a positive impact in my future endeavors! 🌟

First Class Music Graduate | Aspiring Arts Educator & Musical Director | Music for All UK

I am delighted to share that I have graduated from Durham University with a BA in Music, achieving First Class Honours! Academically, I am particularly proud of the high First Class results I received during my final year, including marks of 80 in Psychology of Music as well as of 85 and 90 in Arts in Education. In the latter module, my research into the potential impact of targeted music programmes within secondary school mental health departments has been recommended for publication by the Faculty of Education, a topic I hope to continue to expand on in the future. A highlight of my degree was completing my dissertation, which adapted Brydie-Leigh Bartleet’s ‘Dimensions of Social Outcomes in Community Music’ to analyse the social impacts of community youth choirs in England, a topic I am passionate about. The revised framework integrates contemporary socio-economic, anthropological and psychological theory to analyse the social outcomes of youth choir engagement, underscoring the need for context-dependent policy and funding. 🎵I am so grateful for fantastic staff and students at St Chad's College, Durham University who made my time as a student so memorable and my tenure as President of Music so rewarding, as well as to the Durham University Student Leadership Framework and my mentor, Sandy Millin (she/her). A special thank you also goes to Victoria Brown, Margaret Masson, Lindsay Z., David Rushton and Jessica Smith for their continued encouragement during my time at St Chad’s and for selecting me to receive the 2023-24 Unsung Hero award. 🎓Looking ahead, I am excited to start my postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge, where I will be studying Music Education at Jesus College Cambridge.

Tech Scholar at Cambridge Consultants | Maths and Computer Science at Durham

Last month marked the end of my time on the Durham Leadership Academy, an amazing, year long leadership development programme. Highlights included a residential weekend and public speaking opportunities, but most of all I had the privilege of being mentored by the wonderful Steve Tunnicliffe who helped me create a strong vision for my exec roles in DurHack and Durham University Women In Technology.  Steve also introduced me to Dave Davis MBE who has given me invaluable career advice and wise words.  I can’t thank the two of them, and the Durham University Student Leadership Framework team, enough for their support over the past year! For my engagement and contributions to the program, I was awarded an Outstanding Contribution Award, and am excited to see what my next year at University will bring.  I wish everyone in the 24/25 cohort a wonderful year!

Politics & International Relations Graduate from Durham University | Vice-Chancellor Scholar for the Arts & multi-disciplinary creative.

I am delighted to announce that I have graduated from Durham University with Upper Second Class Honours with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and International Relations. As a first-gen student, this has been an enormous achievement for myself, my family and my community. Durham and its opportunities have truly shaped me into a stronger and more resilient person. One of the highlights of my academic journey was achieving a 76% on my dissertation, titled "Unleashing the Potential of the Arts in Mitigating Youth Violence: Challenges and Opportunities in Policy Integration." My research, which used qualitative methods, involved interviewing key stakeholders from institutions such as the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Ministry of Justice, the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance, and Redhills. These participants, who work with young offenders, arts organizations, or within the government, provided valuable insights into fostering change within the complex issue of youth violence in the UK. Beyond academics, some of my highlights include being the Founder and President of Perception Theatre Company (South College’s First Theatre Society) in my second year, as well as modelling in the Durham University Charity Fashion Show raising £230,000 for Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). Receiving the Vice-Chancellor Scholarship for the Arts, Music and Sport has allowed me to do wonderful things with Durham Student Theatre. Whether that’s performing as Desdemona in Othello, Mickey in Mojo or going to Edinburgh Fringe to perform a 5-star show, named by Theatre Weekly. And, to be in the Durham Showcase for not just a Durham run but at the Tabard Theatre in London. These experiences have truly shaped my craft. A proud moment was writing and directing my first-ever play for the Durham Drama Festival: The Whole of England Stopped when a Policeman Murdered a White Woman. My love for class politics, and alleviating social exclusion through the medium of art, rap and spoken word brought this narrative and vision to life. A massive thanks to the cast and crew that poured their heart and soul into this project. I am eternally grateful. A special thank you to the Durham University Student Leadership Framework for their unwavering support. Receiving a certificate of accomplishment from the Durham University Leadership Academy Programme, and participating in the Speaker Series, think tanks, workshops, and a residential programme, has been invaluable in honing my leadership skills. Lastly, a shoutout to my incredible mentor, Katie Vause, who has supported me to better my leadership skills throughout the year. I have learnt a lot about the inner workings of government through such a kind and palatable lens. I am immensely grateful for the support of my mentors, peers, and those who continue to kindly help me in all my endeavours. Durham you have been amazing! Here is to the next chapter! ✈️ #durhamuniversity #graduate #actor #politics
