We’re the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) and we’re taking a stand against suicide.
About us
The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against suicide, the single biggest killer of men aged under 45 in the UK. Free, confidential helpline 0800585858 & webchat open 5pm-12am daily. What we do... Frontline services Anyone can hit crisis point. We run a free and confidential helpline and webchat – 7 hours a day, 7 days a week for anyone who needs to talk about life’s problems. We support those bereaved by suicide, through the Support After Suicide Partnership (SASP). Communities Together we’ll help our boys, our dads, our mums, brothers, sisters, friends and colleagues. We spread our message and facilitate supportive spaces in workplaces, universities, pubs, clubs and prisons across the country – so that people feel empowered to share their experiences and get the help they need before they reach the point of crisis. Campaigns Everyone has a part to play. We campaign with media partners, brands and ambassadors to spread awareness of suicide and its devastating impact with campaigns like #Project84, #DontBottleItUp and The Best Man Project. We challenge boring male stereotypes and encourage positive behavioural change and help-seeking behaviour, using cultural touch points like art, music, sport and comedy.

Our patron Romesh chatted with The Times about what it feels like to have suicidal thoughts. Here's a snippet of what he had to say 👇 "Having suicidal thoughts is a bit like being an ex-smoker and knowing you can have a cigarette. There’s always a danger that you can go back. It’s never going to completely go. I think about my life that’s happened since then, the amazing experiences I’ve had, the amazing family that I’ve got ... I would have forgone all of this. That’s the thing with suicide. You get so caught up that you feel like your mental state is permanent. And it just isn’t.”

This World Mental Health Day, we’re proud to present our new film. A film that tells the story of what we do at CALM. That highlights that stopping suicide starts with all of us. And that shows we can all play a part in preventing it. CALM’s vision is that no one feels like suicide is their only option. But right now, too many people are struggling to see a way forward. We want this film to help us reach more people. To help anyone struggling with life know we’re here every day. And show people that we’re here to provide everyone with the skills to help prevent suicide. Watch the film. Share the film. And discover the part you - and your organisation - can play in preventing suicide. 💚 Because stopping suicide starts with all of us. A massive thank you to CALM ambassadors New Order for allowing us to use 'Your Silent Face' as the soundtrack.

We know that stories of survival inspire stories of survival - and show people there’s always a reason to give tomorrow a chance. There's always a reason to stay. That's why we're proud that campaigns like Missed Birthdays have encouraged more people to share their stories. And that’s why we’re here every day - to help anyone struggling with life to find hope and a reason to stay. To show people they're never alone. 💚 Stand with us and help more people know that things can get better.

This is an urgent wake up call - and very important work from The Film & TV Charity on bringing these shocking figures to light. It's another sign that too many people are struggling and desperate for help. And a sign that we all need to stand together, united against suicide. If you need us, please remember. We're here every day to help.
The UK's Film and TV Charity has released headline findings from its Looking Glass Survey and the results show a deepening mental health crisis.

SIMON GUNNING: SUICIDE IS THE BIGGEST KILLER FOR PEOPLE UNDER 30 (Please listen or watch this episode) ‘How are you?’ - a question we don't ask enough, but one Simon Gunning wants us to ask more often. Ahead of World Mental Health Day, I’m joined by Simon, CEO of CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), a charity dedicated to suicide prevention, raising awareness, and offering practical support. As an ambassador for CALM and someone who has had struggles with anxiety myself, this conversation means a lot to me, and one that is important to share. This conversation contains discussion of suicide which some listeners might find distressing. There are some staggering stats about death by suicide in recent years and yet it’s still such a difficult thing to talk about, but charities like CALM are breaking down barriers and really shining light into a topic which can sometimes feel intolerably dark. Simon and I reflect on our relationships with our fathers, how a handshake was his only physical connection with his dad, and why these generational silences shape men’s aptitudes of emotion. This episode is about why leaning into the uncomfortable can be life changing - or indeed, saving. Search Great Company wherever you get your Podcasts
