Disabled people are at the heart of the Government's plan to Get Britain Working. Minister for Social Security and Disability Sir Stephen Timms visited Support Dogs UK, a charity that supports individuals with autism, epilepsy, and other disabilities through the provision of specially-trained assistance dogs. The presence of the support dogs not only provides essential companionship for their owners, but they also play a significant role in removing barriers to everyday living and employment. Some of the barriers that disabled people can struggle with occur in the benefits system, which is why the DWP will be publishing plans for social security reforms in a Green Paper in the spring.

We’re taking immediate action to improve adult social care and take pressure off the NHS. Our package of support will deliver the government’s Plan for Change. It will help keep older people out of hospital and living at home independently for longer and allow thousands more disabled people to receive home adaptations. Baroness Louise Casey will lead an independent commission into building a National Care Service. Through investment and reform, we will make quality social care available to all who need it.
