The Hackney Buzzline's September 2024 update highlights the community's efforts to restore pollinator habitats. ecoACTIVE has identified over 130 species of bees and butterflies in Hackney's parks, including rare and declining species. With support from local schools and residents, projects like pollinator-friendly flower beds and memorial gardens are flourishing. Future plans include a butterfly meadow on Daubeney Fields and planting 5,000 bluebells in Millfields Park. Volunteers are invited to get involved with upcoming planting days and monitoring efforts. https://lnkd.in/eXaM39fd

📢 Calling all BeeWalkers!🚶🏽 As we head into autumn, this is a friendly reminder to complete your BeeWalks for September and October. This is a crucial time to count bumblebees: the more transects with full season data, the better the quality of the BeeWalk dataset 📊🐝 🌦️ The weather may be variable, but your efforts are essential in helping us monitor bumblebee populations. 👌 Where possible, survey between 11am and 5pm when the weather is dry and calm. Avoid heavy rain and strong winds. ⚠️ Even if you don't think you'll see any bumblebees on your October surveys, please still survey and submit the details. Not seeing bumblebees is still important data for us! Thank you for your continued commitment to this important work 💚

South Korea’s incredible success in achieving a 98% recycling rate for food waste is truly inspiring. It shows how a well-structured system and public engagement can lead to remarkable environmental outcomes. We believe that education plays a crucial role in supporting such initiatives. Teaching communities about responsible consumption and proper waste separation can help address some of the challenges, like reducing the overall amount of waste and ensuring correct sorting. The lessons for food producers and retailers are also clear—waste reduction at the source, combined with effective recycling, offers both environmental and economic benefits. South Korea’s model is a great example for others to follow, not just to reduce costs, but to build a more sustainable future. #Sustainability #FoodWaste #EnvironmentalEducation #CircularEconomy

98% recycling rate for food waste in South Korea South Korea has implemented a highly effective food waste management system, recycling 98% of its food waste. This success is largely due to the establishment of facilities like the Daejeon Bioenergy Center, which converts food waste into green energy for 20,000 households. The country's transformation over 20 years, from discarding nearly all food waste to recycling almost all of it, was achieved by banning food scraps from landfills, requiring residents to separate waste, and charging fees for waste disposal. These efforts make South Korea one of the few nations with a nationwide food waste management system. Globally, food waste remains a significant issue, with up to 31% of food being wasted, contributing to 6-8% of global emissions. The United Nations estimates that $ 1 trillion is lost annually due to food waste. Countries and cities worldwide are beginning to adopt similar measures, but few have matched South Korea's scale and effectiveness in addressing food waste. What the challenges for such initiatives? Despite its success in recycling food waste, South Korea still faces challenges, such as the difficulty in reducing the overall amount of food waste generated and the complexities of sorting waste correctly. While recycling is efficient, issues arise when non-compostable items are mistakenly included, leading to potential mechanical breakdowns at recycling facilities. Moreover, certain aspects of the South Korean model, like biogas production, may not be adaptable to other climates or countries due to different environmental and economic conditions. What are the key learnings of such initiatives for food producers and retailers? The key lesson from South Korea's experience is the importance of reducing food waste at the source. While recycling is crucial, the most significant benefits come from minimizing waste in the first place which results in significant cost reduction for businesses. South Korea's example highlights the need for comprehensive strategies that include both waste reduction and effective recycling systems, particularly as global food waste continues to be a major environmental and economic issue. What are the benefit for food waste iniatives for food producers and retailers? 〰️Cost Reduction: Lower disposal fees and waste management costs through recycling initiatives. 〰️Revenue Opportunities: Convert waste into profitable products like biogas, compost, or animal feed. 〰️Environmental Responsibility: Reduce methane emissions, improve brand image, and meet sustainability goals. 〰️Compliance and Penalties: Avoid fines and adapt to stricter regulations as seen globally. 〰️Consumer Appeal: Cater to environmentally-conscious consumers, boosting sales and loyalty.
