Our team at EnsiliTech® would like to wish everybody a happy National STEM Day! As a biotechnology startup founded on innovation, we want to celebrate this special day which supports recruitment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) worldwide. STEM day being held on November 8th is no coincidence, with Nov8 pronounced as ‘innovate’ in some accents. The publicity and activities around this day inspire young people to pursue STEM subjects in their education and careers. The number of STEM professionals in the UK has increased by 22% in the last decade. Our founder, Dr Asel Sartbaeva, is committed to furthering STEM education. As an academic at the University of Bath she engaged in extensive outreach in schools, designing and presenting science experiments targeted to a primary school audience. She saw success, explaining that “Kids get excited about doing these experiments, and I can see they gain in confidence.” Through her outreach work, in 2021 Asel was invited to be a UNICEF ambassador for girls in science. The plan originally was to reach 300 girls in Kyrgyzstan. However, the project was even more successful than anticipated, with over 1,000 girls going through the programme. The results of this outreach were apparent, with a greatly increased number of girls going to university in science majors, saying that “they really saw that science could be for them.” A major focus of National STEM Day is to promote diversity and inclusion by encouraging STEM participation amongst underrepresented groups. Thanks to movements like this one, the representation of women in STEM continues to grow. In 1970, 8% of all STEM workers in the United States were women, currently this number has grown to 27% (26% in the UK). With a female CEO and many female members in our team, we couldn’t be more passionate about today’s celebrations. #Nationalstemday #UNICEFgirlsinscience #STEMwomen #EnsiliTech
About us
Our novel ensilication technology exploits the growth of protective silica nanoshells on the surface of vaccine components, to prevent degradation, which can lead to vaccine spoilage. Once applied, our vaccines can be stored and transported without the need for cold chain infrastructure, preventing wastage, improving shelf-life and increasing vaccine accessibility globally. Ensilication can be applied to protect a wide variety of biomolecules against environmental degradation, eliminating the need for cold chain requirements and propelling the development of more oral and mucosal delivery of vaccines and therapeutics for both animals and humans. We are actively looking for partners to work with us in developing new technologies free from the reliance on the cold chain. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you're interested in finding out more about us and the problem of cold chain dependent vaccines.

The Royal Society of Chemistry celebrates National Chemistry Week (NCW) in the UK from 4th - 10th November. EnsiliTech® is celebrating NCW and the importance of chemistry and its potential to help solve global problems. This year’s focus is ‘Chemistry is shaping the future.’ Topics highlighted throughout this week include Sustainability, the Environment and Careers in Chemistry. These goals are particularly relevant to us with our technology having the potential to remove the need for refrigeration via the cold chain, improving transport and storage of vaccines. NCW includes a focus on the environment and the potential of chemistry to support climate solutions. At EnsiliTech, we aim to significantly reduce the environmental impact associated with the vaccine cold chain. The cold chain is the temperature-controlled, refrigerated supply chain that underpins the storage, transport and distribution of vaccines. However, it is harmful for our planet, producing over 1.5 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide yearly, which contributes to global warming. With our Ensilication® technology, vaccines will no longer have to be transported using the cold chain. We aim to use our technology to mitigate the need for the cold chain in the transport of biologicals, an advancement through chemistry that could have a positive impact on our world. We’re also strongly supportive of Careers in Chemistry. Our founder and CEO, Asel, is a UNICEF Ambassador for girls in science. Through this programme she connected with over 1,000 girls in her home country of Kyrgyzstan to teach them about chemistry. This increased university attendance rates amongst these girls in STEM subjects. EnsiliTech is dedicated to encouraging careers in chemistry, as we recognise the positive impact that innovations in chemistry can have worldwide. #NationalChemistryWeek #UNICEFambassador #Girlsinscience #Ensilication
