This week, the UK Government released a report on ‘Assuring a Responsible Future for AI,’ outlining steps it will take to promote UK organisations’ roles in global AI assurance and supporting the development of a network of AI Safety Institutes. The Government found that: 🔹 There are currently an estimated 524 firms supplying AI assurance goods and services in the UK, including 84 specialised AI assurance companies. 🔹 Altogether, these 524 companies are generating an estimated £1.01 billion and employ an estimated 12,572 employees, making the UK’s AI assurance market bigger relative to its economic activity than those in the US, Germany and France. 🔹 Despite evidence that both demand and supply are currently below their potential, there are strong indications that the market is set to continue growing, with the potential to exceed £6.53 billion by 2035 if opportunities to drive future growth are realised. 👉 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e7hZZVBV

Governing AI is challenging, due to the rapid pace of technology change, the need to bring together policymakers, companies and civil society, and the need to upskill everyone quickly. Scott Cooper joined Enzai’s AI Governance Podcast to discuss how international standardization can help navigate these challenges. Nobody understands the international standardization space better than Scott. An advocate for consumer protection, Scott’s was previously VP for Policy at the ANSI - American National Standards Institute. Scott also worked with lawmakers, companies and civil society – including advising the U.S. House of Representatives and the CEO of Hewlett-Packard on consumer protection, governance, and standardization issues. Scott joined Enzai’s Var Shankar to discuss: - how international standardization can help with many of the challenges that AI governance faces today, from benchmarking to upskilling; - the origin of American standardization efforts during the 1840s, in the context of steam engine and ship safety; - how the creation of land grant colleges during the American Civil War helped rapidly train a generation of engineers; - how the assurance regime for toy safety – which brought together Chinese manufacturers, American retailers, and ISO-accredited testing, inspection and auditing companies – was eventually incorporated into hard law; and - the implications of AI being accessible via natural language, in any language.
