Well done California! 🎉 California has become the first U.S. state to pass an EPR bill designed to support fashion and textiles companies to be responsible stewards for any waste they produce, following countries like France and the Netherlands. 🏃♀️ Under The Responsible Textile Recovery Act, producers will have to implement and fund programmes for reusing, repairing and recycling their products. This will incentivise manufacturers to think about the design of their products through their entire lifecycle. ♻️ We know this is a significant waste stream - our ‘Driving a Circular Economy for Textiles through EPR’ report commissioned by Changing Markets Foundation and European Environmental Bureau showed that textile consumption in Europe had on average the fourth highest impact on the environment and climate change from a global life cycle perspective in 2020, after food, housing and mobility. To find out how extended producer responsibility (EPR) and supporting policy measures can drive a circular economy for textiles (in the context of Europe), check out the report in the comments below. 👇 Are you a brand that needs help navigating EPR? Get in touch with one of our EPR experts Sarah Edwards and she will answer all your questions. ☎️ - #EPR #FashionLifecycle #FastFashion #FashionWaste #TextilesWaste #Apparel #NetZero #Sustainability #Environment #SustainableBusiness #Reuse #Repair #Recycle

Going to Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) fall conference next week? Keep an eye out for Michael Wasserman who will be talking about EPR for packaging, reuse and organics 🗨 Come and say hello 👋 #recycling #EPR #reuse
I am looking forward to attending and moderating a session at the Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) fall conference next week! If anyone in my network will be attending, please reach out as it will be great to catch up. Here are a few things I am looking forward to discussing and learning more about: 📦 EPR for Packaging: Only one state in the Northeast has passed EPR for packaging (Maine), but there is a lot to learn from the bills passed in four other states. The 2025 legislative session will be an exciting time for additional EPR bills. 🥛 Reuse: There is a recent flurry of activity and interest in reuse for packaging. How can we create an enabling environment for reuse through policy? (The 5 bottle bills in the northeast are a great start 😊) 🍎 Organics: How can we continue to expand organics collection to residents to divert material away from landfill. There are a few Eunomia reports that may be interest to those attending: 50 States of Recycling: https://lnkd.in/et6TdQCr Delivering a More Sustainable Takeaway Packaging System for Uber Eats: https://lnkd.in/esGeNXGT Facilitating the adoption of takeaway reuse systems: https://lnkd.in/eD-wpQ8f

Great to hear you caught the presentation from Chris Sherrington on Tuesday and thank you for the acknowledgement - we really do need to reduce consumption and align net zero targets with carbon budgets 💪 If you're interested in seeing the studies Chris based his presentation on they can be found posted in the comments below 👇 1️⃣ Managing Materials for 1.5°C: An EU Regulatory Framework for a Low Carbon Material Economy 2️⃣ Decarbonisation of Single Use Beverage Packaging The steel reUse project sounds really valuable too 👊
Definitely feel like I made the most of being in London today. Alongside project meetings, a quick detour via the #NetZeroFestival meant I got to catch Chris Sherrington 's talk on the Net Zero challenges for materials production (aka, we really really need to reduce consumption) and catch up with Sarah Harrold and Richard Miller. Finally, an evening spent at the Innovate UK supported DISRUPT project final dissemination event (through the #NICER programme) about Steel ReUse. I've been really pleased with the outputs of this project that have delved into the subtle system barriers, with great involvement from the demolition contractors sector. Free access toolkits and learning can be found through their website: https://lnkd.in/dufnsYr7 Huge thanks to Katherine Adams PhD Asselia Katenbayeva, PhD Roy Fishwick Howard Button Hon.FIDE, FCIWM, CENV and many others who contributed to the event and the interesting follow-on discussions. Just wish I'd got more photos of the fantastic Heyne Tillett Steel offices that really reflected what great spaces can be produced when you prioritise sustainability. #CircularEconomy (noting LinkedIn refusing to put the photos in the right order... hopefully it's clear which being to which event!)

And that's a wrap! 🥳 What a wonderful couple of days at BusinessGreen Net Zero Festival having inspiring conversations and making new connections with people and organisations all trying to figure out how we 'turbocharge' the journey to net zero. 🚀 Shout out to the team from enough who came and said hello and told us all about their mission to reduce single use plastic in our food supply chain with a new refill and surplus store model. We're excited to see how their first shipping container store is received! 🫙 Thank you so much to everyone who stopped for a chat and said hello 🤝 And a big shout out to Will Proud PhD for coordinating our participation in this great event over the last two days 👊 Here are some great photos the team managed to capture of Katharine Rowland, Will Proud PhD and Rebecca Mason! - #NetZeroFestival #NetZero #Sustainability #Environment #SustainableBusiness Business Design Centre

The highlight of last week was joining a panel of experts* at the Consumer Brands Association's CEO Summit in which we explored the differing (and sometimes conflicting) imperatives of sustainability & supply chain management. The panel was followed by three workshops that looked in more detail at ways in which companies can achieve sustainability, reduce risk and increase supply chain efficiency with a focus on technology, data and analytics as enablers. A few of the many takeaways: - examples of reducing power and water consumption go straight to the goals of reducing impact as well as reducing cost and there is almost always procedural improvement opportunities before capital is deployed to improve systems. - an example of how technology can lower emissions and cost and drive supply chain efficiency is the use of predictive analytics to use refrigerated transportation [only] when necessary. - a patchwork of expanding local, national and international regulations are challenging to meet but, where a strategic approach is being taken, companies are finding opportunities to reduce risk and improve visibility/transparency through the data being collected. It was also fantastic to meet many CPG executives during the conference and hear about their concerns and successes. Supply chain risk was part of almost every conversation, particularly how to better embed risk analytics in corporate and supply chain decision-making and where companies can collaborate in a 'pre-competitive' manner to accelerate this. A big thank you to Thomas Madrecki at CBA and Robert Holston and the team at EY for leading a thoughtful and well-organized event. * As I say, deep expertise on the panel which included: Sameer Anand, Lisa Hartkopf and Ashutosh Dekhne of EY, David Correll from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Sarah Edwards, of Eunomia Research & Consulting, Amanda Hodges, of Republic Services and Rajen Raval of Microsoft. #CPGsummit #consumerbrands #supplychain #supplychainrisk #supplychainresilience #sustainability Jessica Mackey Mario Grande Knut Alicke, Daniel Stanton, Brian Laung Aoaeh, CFA, Radu Palamariu, Rushit Shah, Benjamin Gordon, Stan Aronow, Joe Carson, Greg Schlegel CPIM, CSP, Jonah, Alan Amling, Dr. Karsten Machholz, Jason Miller, Marc Dragon, Dave Food, Prof. Dr. Larry Wigger, Matt Loach, Pam Simon, Rob Handfield, Ted Stank, Ravi Heerwani, Matt Algar, Kevin O'Meara, Glenn A. Who saw our Chris Sherrington take the stage at Net Zero Festival yesterday? 🎤 Chris did a boundary pushing talk on whether net zero is enough in the materials production sector. His presentation highlighted that published plans for net zero by 2050 in the materials sector are unlikely to be enough to limit warming to 1.5 degrees. 🌡️ BUT These sectors can: - Re-align their net zero targets with carbon budgets to limit warming ✅ - Reduce consumption to meet their targets ✅ - Consider short-term deployment of technologies and other actions ✅ Want some help understanding carbon budgets? Connect with Chris in the comments. We've also included a link to 'Is net zero enough for the materials production sector?' below! 👇 - #NetZeroFestival #NetZero #Sustainability #Environment #SustainableBusiness #Packaging #MassProduction #MaterialProduction #CircularEconomy #ClimateChange
