Yesterday, I attended a virtual event hosted by Everymind at Work, focused on suicide prevention and workplace support following a suicide. Along with Amelia Wrighton, Co-Founder of Suicide&Co, they provided practical advice on how to support colleagues grieving a suicide loss. Talking about suicide is such an important topic, as is learning how to support those affected by it. What I took away from the session is this: don’t be afraid to simply be there for someone. Don’t be afraid to ask, not "How are you?" (which can feel inappropriate), but "How are you doing today?"—a question with a much different tone. As a manager, it’s important to engage with colleagues affected by such a loss. Ask them what kind of support they need, whether they’d like to talk about it formally, and check in with them regularly. The emotional impact may not hit right away but could surface in 3 to 6 months. It's also helpful to be aware of significant dates related to the person they've lost, as these can affect a team member’s behavior. At the same time, be sure to give them the space and time they need. For anyone reading this post from the England or Wales in need of support, please check out Suicide&Co , which provides free services for those who need it. If you're looking to support your Mental Health First Aiders or workplace well-being, visit Everymind at Work. And as a final note: Please remember, it's OK to ask for help.

'It's okay to not be okay' - is a phrase that's never sat well with me. I understand the positive reasoning behind it, but really, it's not 'okay' to be struggling with your mental health. The struggle varies in intensity from person to person but it can be hellish and downright crippling. Nothing 'okay' about it. However, it is completely normal to struggle with your mental health at one time or another. Including having suicidal thoughts and feelings. So I support the 'it's okay to ask for help' phrase, shared by Everymind at Work in their webinar yesterday. Because that's what we need to be encouraging: people to talk, people to ask for help, for the stigma to be removed, for all of us to listen better. Especially in the workplace. Yesterday's webinar focused on how to support a colleague through suicide grief. 'Suicide grief is like grief with the volume turned up' - a perfect analogy. The webinar was really helpful, as were the resources shared. The recording will be available on the Everymind website so I recommend watching it (https://lnkd.in/dtacqDFN) plus checking out the support available through Suicide&Co (https://lnkd.in/dq_Ms8f8). Best quote from the webinar: 'You're never going to impact someone negatively by asking if they're okay.' So check in on each other & ask away 😊 ⫸ What other resources / organisations would you recommend for supporting mental health in the workplace? ⫸ What about for suicide prevention or suicide grief? #HR #Wellbeing #WorkplaceWellbeing #Bereavement #SuicidePrevention #SuicideGrief

I attended a really useful webinar today on 'how to support a colleague through suicide grief'. A challenging topic, but so well delivered by Paul McGregor from Everymind at Work and Amelia Wrighton from Suicide&Co . As someone bereaved by suicide, I can't begin to describe the devastation. However, how an employer supports you during this traumatic time is crucial. Both Everymind at Work and Suicide & Co have some great resources on their websites. Why not check them out and start the conversation in your workplace.

Thank you Everymind at Work and Suicide&Co for this afternoon’s “How to Support a Colleague Through Suicide Grief” session. An open and honest dialogue that provided insightful guidance on how to approach suicide grief in the workplace and the resources shared have already been added to our Wellbeing Hub for the staff at Versus Arthritis to access 💛 Regardless of whether you are in a wellbeing role, I would recommend following both of these organisations, as the information, guidance and resources provided support us all to be better managers and peer support to our colleagues. #wellbeing #mentalhealth #support #peersupport #workplacewellbeing
