Last week, the FAI team had the pleasure of visiting Yeo Valley Organic for a day packed with inspiration, insight, and incredible food!   The day kicked off with a dive into the history of Yeo Valley with Tim Mead, explaining how the brand has grown while staying rooted in producing healthy, nutritious food. William Mayor shared Yeo Valley's commitment to driving positive impacts on people, animals and planet on a farm tour, with discussions around dairy welfare and genetics, regenerative grazing and agroforestry management. We then enjoyed a delicious lunch made with beef from Yeo’s very own agroforestry dairy beef system and Wildfarmed pastry! Insights into Decapod Sentience: Applying the General Welfare Index (GWI) for Whiteleg Shrimp. 🔬 This research represents a critical step forward in applying welfare indicators to shrimp aquaculture, especially for Penaeus vannamei, which accounts for 80% of farmed shrimp worldwide. The GWI includes 31 specific and measurable welfare indicators, now adapted to P. vannamei, offering a comprehensive assessment framework to improve living conditions in alignment with legislation adopted on decapods’ sentience and contemporary scientific advances. 🤝 We are very proud of our collaborations with leading experts and authors of the study, Ana Silvia Pedrazzani, Nathieli Cozer, MURILO QUINTILIANO and Antonio Ostrensky Neto, to ensure that the implementation of animal welfare is grounded in the latest scientific research. Animal welfare is a crucial component of responsible aquaculture. At Ethical Seafood Research, we're committed to ensuring that all aquatic animals in food systems are treated humanely for which we need science-based standards that push the sector towards sustainable production practices. 🐟 🔍 A great example of such a standard is the FAI apps for tilapia and shrimp welfare as well as their e-learning courses which provide farmers and stakeholders with valuable tools and resources for monitoring and improving the welfare of their animals. By focusing on monitoring water quality, providing optimal living conditions, and reducing overall stress, we can create healthier and more humane aquaculture systems. 🎉Were thrilled to share that Marks and Spencer has won the Special Recognition Award (Innovation Award Category) from Compassion in World Farming, highlighting their innovative work in shrimp welfare across their supply chain 🌍 With support from FAI, M&S developed a pioneering protocol to enhance shrimp welfare that eliminates eye-stalk ablation, introduces electric stunning, and supports farmers with extensive welfare training. It’s hoped that this new initiative will benefit 300 million shrimp annually 🦐💧 M&S continues to lead in animal welfare, setting new standards that prioritise health and humane practices in the aquaculture sector. 🥚🐔 Highlights from the 6th Quality & Welfare Egg Conference in Shanghai 🐔🥚   Last week, the 6th Quality & Welfare Egg Conference provided in-depth insights into the egg industry, exploring both Chinese and global perspectives. Organised by FAI, Silk Road Chamber of International Commerce (SRCIC), and IQC-China, with guidance from China Animal Health and Food Safety Alliance 国家动物健康与食品安全创新联盟（CAFA）, the event attracted around 160 experts from around the world.   🌍 Øistein Thorsen, CEO of FAI, emphasised the summit’s mission to promote the large-scale adoption of cage-free eggs in China through trust and collaboration. His presentation covered global trends, European policies, and practical case studies from farm and food brands.   💡 Huipin (Julia) Lee, Veterinary Consultant, highlighted the importance of cage-free egg production, citing challenges like investment needs and low consumer awareness, but also opportunities through government support and technology. She emphasised the importance of clear goals, risk management, and data-driven solutions. While still emerging, cage-free production demands industry adaptation and innovation for better animal welfare and sustainability. 📊 Dr. Lucy Asher, Professor of Behaviour Informatics, Newcastle University, discussed using technology to monitor free-range chicken behaviour and welfare through machine learning, sound analysis, and computer vision to predict mortality, identify pecking, and monitor crowding.
