Stirling prize shortlisted, London-based architects delivering beautiful, low tech architecture across the UK.
About us
Feilden Fowles is an award-winning London-based architecture practice, founded in 2009 by Fergus Feilden and Edmund Fowles. Committed to a low-tech approach, the practice delivers socially and environmentally sustainable buildings across a variety of sectors. Feilden Fowles aims to make architecture that is rich in character and distinct in identity, while seeking simple and holistic solutions with an ambition to achieve net zero carbon buildings. Their buildings emerge from legible design concepts which inform the detailing and construction processes. Projects are underpinned by a strategy of longevity over short-termism, using robust yet adaptable structures, and simple but beautiful materials. Notable current projects include the Urban Nature Project at the Natural History Museum, which will reimagine the gardens surrounding the museum; student accommodation at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford; a new central hall at the National Railway Museum in York; and Black Robin Farm, a new arts, education and cultural centre in the South Downs. Built works to date span across culture, education, heritage, commercial and residential sectors. Examples include the new dining hall at Homerton College, University of Cambridge; 2019 Stirling Prize finalist The Weston visitor centre and gallery at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield; The Fratry, Carlisle Cathedral, Cumbria; Charlie Bigham’s Food Production Campus, Somerset; and Waterloo City Farm, where the practice’s award-winning studio is located. The work of the practice has been recognised with a number of awards, most recently: Wood Awards 2023 (New Dining Hall, Homerton College, University of Cambridge); 2019 Stirling Prize finalist (The Weston, Yorkshire Sculpture Park); Architect of the Year and Public Architect of the Year in BD’s AYA Awards 2021; Civic Trust Award 2021 (The Weston, Yorkshire Sculpture Park); and AJ 40 under 40 practice in 2020.

We're delighted that the Dining Hall at Homerton College, Cambridge has been awarded a RIBA East Award. Our director Edmund Fowles and project architect Eleanor Hedley were at the ceremony last night alongside Francesca Moore, Vice Principal at Homerton College. Feilden Fowles’ design for the hall is symbolic of Homerton’s progressive character and its bold social ambitions, yet simultaneously sits in dialogue with the rich architectural heritage of Cambridge. There are echoes of the marching buttresses of King’s College Chapel, references to the Victorian Gothic Revival of Homerton’s Great Hall, and motifs of the neighbouring Arts and Crafts Ibberson Building. The highly crafted material and tectonic language combine as a marker of today’s architectural thinking, an embodiment of low-tech design principles: an Arts & Crafts building for the 21st century. ‘A young (ish) Cambridge college took a chance on a young architectural practice with big ambition and an even bigger heart. The result is a building that is a triumph of intelligent design with deep social, cultural, and environmental purpose.’ Francesca Moore. We're sharing a film made by Jim Stephenson and Laura Mark, where Edmund speaks about the influence of the Arts and Crafts, low tech design and the social agenda behind the creation of the building.
