Skills-based hiring is going nowhere fast. We're moving away from only using education qualifications and previous job titles as predictors of people's potential, and instead entering a new era where skills are becoming the bigger focus. We've written about this a couple of times this year (a recruitment company talking about skills, who'd have thought it!) but it's hit the news again recently thanks to a Harvard Business School and The Burning Glass Institute report that found that skills-based hires actually stick around longer, with a 20% higher retention rate than other hires.   Couple that with it creating a 60% higher chance of a successful hire and it seems like a no brainer to go down the skills-based route.   But is that what's actually happening? Well, not quite…   Despite 61% of recruiting pros saying they'd be focused on skills based hiring in 2024 (LinkedIn's Future of Recruiting Report), coincidentally the same percentage of global companies actually raised their degree or work experience requirements for entry-level jobs. It seems like, for now at least, some companies are struggling to translate their intention to move to skills-based hiring into actually doing it.   Now, there'll always be roles where you absolutely, categorically need an aligned degree, we're not disputing that. But the face of recruitment does seem to be changing - at least on paper. It'll be interesting to see how this topic continues to play out over the coming months and years and how many more companies opt to go skills-first.   Have you made the shift to skills-first hiring? How do you think it'll change the face of recruitment? Let us know in the comments!     Sources:   https://lnkd.in/eQ2A6Jfd   https://lnkd.in/driYM5CM

Ah, the dreaded brain drain.   Catchy name aside, the brain drain is a very real problem. Say you've got a great team in place who know their stuff, have years of experience under their belt, and could do their jobs with their eyes closed. What happens when they retire?   The 'boomer brain drain' has really started to kick in over the last couple of years, and as that generation starts to retire they're often taking with them decades of experience. The best way to solve this? Succession planning. Here's how to get it right:   🧠 Hire early: Yes, it might feel a little awkward hiring someone's replacement before they're out the door, but it doesn't have to be that way. Retiring employees can then act as a mentor to new hires, passing on the knowledge they have directly.   🧠 Get a plan in place: How often is knowledge kept in someone's head and never written down? Make sure you've got a solid knowledge transfer plan in place to make sure knowledge and experience isn't lost, using tech to capture it for the future.   🧠 Think about the future: By figuring out what roles would add much needed skills to your team, you can then put a solid hiring strategy in place to get them in situ before those who are retiring actually retire.   Want to know more? Check out our blog that's all about beating the brain drain here: https://lnkd.in/ePd_iqbC
