The intersection of climate change and conflict in Kenya presents a complex and pressing challenge that threatens the country's socio-economic development, environmental sustainability, and political stability. Last week, The Kenya Climate Change Working Group (KCCWG), World Resources Institute, and other partners convened the 'National Stakeholders Workshop on Climate Resilience, Peace and Security in Kenya'. Kenya is urbanizing rapidly, and the national climate discourse must prioritize urban peace and security, particularly for urban poor communities living in informal settlements. As climate change impacts are anticipated to worsen in the future, it will be critical to: ➡ Address urban water conflict as a key concern that threatens urban security and reduces climate resilience efforts. ➡ Enhance collaborative approaches with state and non-state actors for opportunities scoping, geared towards building urban climate resilience. ➡ Adopt a data and analysis approach for evidence informed decision making, to influence policy and action on climate resilience. Many farmers in Kenya and throughout East Africa watched helplessly as their crops withered and animals died as a result of severe flooding in April and May. Phylis David Kiveli, a member of Ahadi Achievers Empowerment CBO, an organization restoring degraded landscapes in the Greater Rift Valley, was optimistic that her fruit tree seedlings would soon bloom. From her many years of farming, she knew that the rains would start lightly in March, build up in April, and slowly subside in May. But this time, things were different. Nigeria’s government recognizes the pivotal role youth are playing in shaping the country’s future by supporting the implementation of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDS). During the 2024 World Environment Day, World Resources Institute and GreenHubAfrica Foundation, in collaboration with the Youth Leadership Steering Committee (YSC), held a panel discussion on key environmental themes and the role of youth in Nigeria’s future planning. Building on these discussions, WRI is developing youth trainings on NDC & LT-LEDS priority areas to empower Nigeria's youth. These trainings are aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of youth climate champions on climate issues and sustainable practices. Modules will include trainings on climate negotiations and policy analysis, grant writing and climate finance tracking, energy access and just transition, green entrepreneurship, and climate change and health. Last week, World Resources Institute's Resilience and Adaptation Mainstreaming Program (RAMP) team met with Ministry of Finance, Ethiopia , Ministry of Planning and Development Ethiopia, and Addis Ababa University to give feedback on the comprehensive capacity needs assessments conducted for to better understand the institutions' baseline capacities against RAMP’s core curriculum, opportunities for capacity building, and entry points for fostering collaboration. Over the next few months, these insights will be transformed into teaching courses delivered through hands-on workshops by RAMP’s technical experts, local university faculty, and senior practitioners from the Ministry of Finance. The RAMP initiative is more than a capacity-building program; it's a long-term commitment to enhancing the core knowledge and planning abilities of government central ministries. By integrating economic development with climate adaptation, the program aims to empower governments to mobilize adaptation finance more effectively.   Here's how RAMP is making a difference:  👉 Support to central ministries: addressing long-term capacity, data & modeling needs, and refining government procedures to tackle climate challenges.  👉 Support to local universities: enhancing their ability, through partnership with SOAS University of London, to offer top-tier graduate-level teaching, professional training, and policy research. Faculty will be co-teaching RAMP activities and conducting local research with provided funding. RAMP also funds university research to contextualize its curriculum and enhance the role of universities as knowledge providers. This approach deviates from the traditional reliance on international consultants to achieve a more context-specific and sustainable delivery model. Find out more about RAMP ➡ https://bit.ly/3Wy8li7

Local voices, local people, local knowledge drive landscape restoration from the ground according to WRI’s Dr Susan Chomba 🌱 In May, hundreds of thousands of people across East Africa were displaced from their homes by severe flooding. Could landscape restoration help people adapt and build resilience for the future? 🫘At least 3 billion people across the world are affected by land degradation. In Kenya, land degradation and deforestation have led to severe impacts on local communities such as agricultural lands losing their ability to produce enough food and floods. 🌳Africa has 750 million hectares of land ready for landscape restoration. Locally led restoration efforts are 6-20X more likely to achieve long-term success and Restore Local is working with thousands of champions across Africa to revive these critical ecosystems.
