UPDATE 🚨 Oil drilling at Horse Hill has FINALLY ended, 4 months after the site’s planning permission was quashed by the Supreme Court. Tireless campaigning by activists, and a legal complaint by Friends of the Earth, helped bring the unlawful activity to an end. https://lnkd.in/ePWxAQ3i The fossil fuel company behind drilling at Horse Hill, UK Oil & Gas confirmed in a statement, seen by Friends of the Earth, that oil production at the site was suspended from last Friday. It follows pressure from campaigners including Sarah Finch and Friends of the Earth’s legal team 👇https://lnkd.in/ewM2t5zk

Breaking 🚨 In June 2024 the Supreme Court ruled Surrey County Council acted unlawfully by giving planning permission for oil production at Horse Hill in the Surrey countryside. Despite this, oil production has unlawfully continued 🤯 "It’s hard to view this as anything other than a developer gaming the planning system and being allowed to get away with it. It’s deeply concerning this has been allowed to go unchecked for so long – it threatens not just the integrity of our planning system, but also local democracy and our ailing climate.” - Katie de Kauwe, lawyer at Friends of the Earth https://lnkd.in/ewM2t5zk

“It’s bad enough that communities like mine have already lost so much through the lack of foresight and planning for the foreseeable effects of climate breakdown. I don’t want anyone else to endure what we’ve been through. But many undoubtedly will unless the government strengthens its adaptation plans.” - Kevin Jordan, co-claimant https://lnkd.in/eH-vhCur

The High Court has ruled that the government’s climate adaptation plan is lawful. Friends of the Earth, with our co-claimant's Doug Paulley and Kevin Jordan, challenged the plan, which will not protect us from the extreme impacts of the climate crisis, particularly geographically vulnerable and disabled people. But the fight is not over. Alongside considering an appeal, we’re calling on the new Labour government to agree that the adaptation plan is inadequate. And that it should be amended "Labour must deliver on its pre-election pledge to improve resilience and preparation by urgently drawing up and implementing a much tougher climate adaptation programme to prepare the UK for the enormous challenges a dangerously warming planet will bring."- Niall Toru, Senior Lawyer Demand that the government’s climate adaptation plan provides real protection from climate breakdown for all. We need a big reduction in our greenhouse gas emissions to prevent climate breakdown, and this must take place on our own soil. To date a large amount of our greenhouse gas cuts have come from outsourcing manufacturing to other countries. We need to see emission reductions through changes in the UK. And this must come alongside the protection of jobs and the support of communities. https://lnkd.in/gjFzgcTu

“The government mustn’t cave into housebuilding lobbying by allowing them to choose whether or not to fit solar panels on new homes... Ministers should be standing up for the interests of households, not the profits of housebuilders.” - Mike Childs, head of policy at Friends of the Earth. https://lnkd.in/gwYmr65x

The government has appointed the UK's first nature envoy to combat the global biodiversity crisis. With #COP16 nature talks kicking off today, we hope this role helps us deliver on global commitments to protect 30% of the world's land and ocean by 2030. “The government has recognised that the nature crisis is of equal gravity to the climate crisis, and that we cannot tackle one without addressing the other. Ecosystems and the species they support are essential to maintain food security, reduce health risks and manage the impacts of rising global temperatures.” - Ruth Davis, nature envoy https://lnkd.in/eWnchqzG
