  • Did you see our St Catherine’s Place site feature on this week’s episode of Digging for Britain? 📽️ In 2023, the Wessex Archaeology team uncovered the remains of Bedminster Mill, an 18th-century water mill located at our Bristol site. During the dig, the team discovered mussel shells, clay pipes, chamber pots, glass bottles, and leather shoes, items that would have been left by locals who worked along Mill Lane. These discoveries have helped archaeologists understand more about the fascinating 300+ year history of the site. ✨ As featured on #DiggingForBritain! ✨ Last year, our team uncovered the remains of an 18th century water mill that sat at the centre of Bedminster’s rapid transformation from idyllic rural setting to bustling urban environment. 🛞🚂 🏭 There's evidence the mill was built as early as 1712. By the early 1800s, the Bedminster area was home to around 3000 people but in just 47 years, the population would increase to a whopping 78,000. Other industries soon moved in, putting pressure on the nearby River Malago that powered the mill. 🌊 As fields were replaced with smelting works, tanneries and railways, the millers worked to ensure that big wheel kept on turning… 🎵 Read more from our project manager Vix about the Land at St Catherines Bristol development with Galliard Homes: 🔗 https://ow.ly/1e6H50UEaEY

    • Field archaeologist Amy is shown with a trowel, hard at work on site.
    • A clay pipe bowl with some decoration and initials on the side. It's partially fractured and blackened with smoke and age.
    • Four glass mineral bottles from the 19th century.
    • A bucket of mussel shells. These were found at the bottom of a drain and were likely sold to busy labourers as a cheap street food.

  • We are extremely proud to showcase our brand-new hand-painted, 150-meter-long wayfinding mural in Nine Elms in partnership with St. Modwen! After one year of planning and two weeks for the talented Global Street Art team to execute, we are so pleased to see the vision brought to life.   Merchants Way is part of our cultural strategy for the Apex 1 site in Nine Elms. The aim was to deliver an artistic project celebrating the heritage whilst also signposting the area's exciting future. Working with the incredibly talented Josephine Hicks (Hixxy) and our good friends at Global Street Art, they have achieved this through bright coloured collage which gives nods to the New Covent Garden Market and other neighbours, including World Heart Beat Studios, Mission Kitchen, and the American Embassy. As part of the installation, new lighting has also been introduced through floor projections, helping to create a safer, more welcoming space at night for pedestrians.   The mural not only provides clear wayfinding and vibrant pops of colour, but most importantly, it allows pedestrians to slow down, look away from their devices and take a minute to enjoy their surroundings. Watch the video to find out more!
