🤩 Oh, what a night! We're thrilled to have picked up the Theatre and Surgical Nursing award at Nursing Times awards last night for our national preoperative assessment network. 👏 Huge congratulations to the fantastic Emma McCone, the regional POA leads and all 320+ members of the network for their dedication to building such a unique and collaborative space, and striving towards the best possible outcomes for patients. Read what the judges had to say: https://bit.ly/3NF6jay Set up in 2022, the network enables continuous peer-to-peer sharing of information and ideas. As well as hosting GIRFT best practice guidance and other resources, the network offers a highly active forum where members can seek and/or offer support, discuss their challenges and share advice, examples and resources with one other. Another amazing surgical hub visited on our Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) Accreditation mission to find the best services for our patients.. Where? #Kiddersminster Treatment Centre, part of Worcester Acute Hospital Trust. A fantastic facility for paediatric surgical services! The pride was palpable, as was the investment in the leadership and development of the staff. I loved the empowerment of children in developing services and the fantastic feedback board in the outpatient facility. How can you ignore Flossy the Flamingo who asks you whether the care you received was a good or bad egg? The staff have so many great innovations for the future and this centre is a jewel in the crown of services for patients in Worcestershire. Thank you to the team for inviting us and taking us around an amazing centre. Sarah Louise Shingler Glen Burley Jules Walton Julian Berlet You should be really proud of your teams across the paediatric surgical pathway. #surgicalhub #patients #children #CYP #innovation

Great to see our collaborative study with The Health Foundation published in The Bulletin of The Royal College of Surgeons of England. The paper looks at the landscape of elective surgical hubs in England, noting the variety of operational and the fact that many hubs that predate the COVID-19 pandemic developed in an organic manner. It also outlines key priorities for further research, including: 🔹 identifying the optimal configuration of a hub; 🔹identifying barriers to offering enhanced care, to help minimise inequity of access to hubs; 🔹whether the clinical specialties represented in a hub meets the needs of its population; and 🔹a financial evaluation of the different models of hub delivery in relation to the quality of care delivered. Updated guidance supporting NHS trusts to expand and increase their use of day case surgery is now available on the Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) website. GIRFT has worked with the British Association of Day Surgery (BADS) and the Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC) to update its National Day Surgery Delivery Pack (first issued in 2020). The new edition offers practical advice to encourage frontline and operational staff to ‘think day case first’. GIRFT is also hosting a webinar with BADS and CPOC on 5th November (12.30pm) to discuss the key actions in the National Day Surgery Delivery Pack and how they can be used to fully maximise the use of day surgery.
