💭 Government launches consultation on sick pay rates for low earners At present, an employee must earn at least £123 per week to be eligible for statutory sick pay (SSP). Under clause 9 of the Employment Rights Bill, the government proposes to remove the lower earnings limit requirement for SSP, meaning that low earners would also be entitled to sick pay. For those with weekly earnings lower than the flat rate for SSP (currently £116.75 per week), the Bill proposes to set SSP payments as a ‘prescribed percentage of the employee’s normal weekly earnings’. On 21 October 2024, the government launched a consultation seeking feedback on what the prescribed percentage should be. The consultation paper provides some examples that set out the approximate costs for employers and also the potential impact of different percentage rates on low earners. The examples range from 60% of earnings, which is the lowest rate that the government’s internal modelling suggests is appropriate, to 80% of earnings, which had previously been proposed in the 2019 Health is Everyone’s Business consultation. The consultation is open until 4 December 2024. #employment #employmentlaw #sickpay #employees #Employmentrights Gemma Durham

Ahead of a summit in Brussels hosted by the Union of European Clubs (UEC), football clubs are advocating for reforms in the governance of the sport. Gareth Farrelly, CEO of the UEC, has emphasized the need for changes, especially following recent court rulings that raised concerns over FIFA and UEFA’s current practices. The forum will bring together political and football stakeholders to discuss potential governance changes and the role the EU could play in shaping future regulations. 1. Why are clubs advocating for reforms ahead of the Brussels summit? Recent court decisions have highlighted concerns about FIFA and UEFA's governance, prompting clubs to push for reforms. They aim to ensure that decision-making processes are more transparent and that stakeholders, such as clubs, have a stronger voice in decisions that affect them. 2. What role could the EU play in sports governance? The EU has the ability to influence governance in sports, especially when it relates to internal market regulations. Legal experts believe the EU could help implement reforms to ensure that FIFA and UEFA follow principles of good governance and transparency. 3. What might happen if FIFA and UEFA don’t implement these reforms? If reforms are not adopted, FIFA and UEFA could face more legal challenges from clubs and other stakeholders. There is growing pressure for these organizations to adapt their governance practices to avoid further conflicts and align with legal standards.
