Global NCAP today presented Tata Motors with their Safer Choice Award for the Tata Safari and Harrier - an accolade only available to automakers committing to the highest levels of safety performance for cars sold in India. Last year the Tata Safari and Harrier achieved a five star Global NCAP rating for adult and child occupant protection with the highest score in Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia campaign. Tata Motors has since submitted the Safari and Harrier for further Safer Choice conformity tests, with the models meeting performance and volume requirements for Autonomous Emergency Breaking (AEB), speed assistance and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) systems. David Ward, President of the Towards Zero Foundation said, “Tata Motors’ continuing commitment to vehicle safety is very welcome and we are pleased to present the first of our new Safer Choice Awards to them for the Safari and Harrier. “Encouraging automakers to achieve ever higher levels of protection, for occupants as well as more vulnerable road users, is at the heart of Global NCAP’s safety mission. We are grateful for the ongoing support and leadership Tata Motors has demonstrated on their road safety journey.” mohan savarkar, Vice President and Chief Product Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited said, “We are proud to have received the Global NCAP Safer Choice Award for our flagship SUVs, the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier. We have continued to be the pioneers in driving the safety conversation – ensuring that our commitment reflects in every vehicle we manufacture, regardless of price point. With this mission at the forefront, not only is our entire portfolio the highest star rated in their respective segment, but we have gone a step further by having the only SUV line-up in India which is completely 5-star rated, setting a benchmark for the passenger vehicles industry to follow. With this approach, we have ensured that safety now ranks as the top priority for the Indian car buyer.   ‘’This recognition today, underscores our unwavering commitment to safety and innovation, ensuring that our customers experience not only comfort and performance, but also the highest standards of safety. We are thankful to the entire Global NCAP team for supporting us in full strength as we continue to make safer cars for India.” Full story here: https://bit.ly/4dMT1Et

One and two star disappointment in latest African crash tests Global NCAP’s new #SaferCarsForAfrica crash results reveal a disappointing two star occupant safety rating for each of the models tested - the Kia Pegas, Renault Triber and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Alejandro Furas, Global NCAP Secretary General said, “We are disappointed to see global brands like Renault, Kia and Maruti Suzuki offer such a low safety performance in markets like South Africa whilst achieving much higher levels of protection in many other global markets. Don’t African consumers deserve the same level of safety?” David Ward, Executive President of the Towards Zero Foundation said, “The double standard on safety in low and middle income economies must come to an end. Manufacturers know how to build safer cars for adult and child occupants as well as for vulnerable road users. Highlighting this disparity and democratising vehicle safety in Africa is a Global NCAP priority.” Sikkie Kajee, Chairman of the The Automobile Association of South Africa said,   “We remain concerned at the low ratings received from the manufacturers, but we are confident they will use these results to improve their safety moving forward. Issues with double-standards persist in relation to vehicles made for Africa but, again, we are assured these matters are being addressed and are confident that in the future, we will see less discrepancies than what we currently do.” Read the full story here: https://bit.ly/3Wum4oQ

📢 NCAPs Unite: Shaping the Future of Automotive Safety 👉This week, I had the privilege of chairing a meeting of New Car Assessment Programs from around the world in the stunning Boardroom at the #ADAC headquarters. Following the #NCAP24 conference, this gathering of global safety leaders was a chance to collaborate, share updates and find solutions to our mutual challenges. 👉The NCAPs play a crucial role in evaluating vehicle safety 🚗🚚🚲🛵 and influencing industry standards. As cars become increasingly automated and connected, their work will be more important than ever. From the latest crash test methodologies to the challenges of evaluating assisted and automated vehicles, the conversation was insightful and productive. 👉 It was inspiring to see so many colleagues committed to making the world's roads safer. I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute to these vital discussions and look forward to our continued cooperation. Director, TRL Academy - Evidence based, innovative and creative transport and mobility solutions

I’m incredibly proud of the work TRL undertook supporting the European Commission and European Parliament to mandate new General Safety Regulation and Pedestrian Safety Regulation in 2022 (GSR2). The EU has established a policy framework to ensure the safest vehicle fleet in the world by 2030, and simultaneously helped the EU Automotive Industry to remain competitive with regard to the challenges of developing automated vehicles. Intelligent Speed Assistance #ISA is a key element of the GSR2 package of measures – road deaths, injuries and collisions are preventable and GSR2 is the equivalent to a ‘vehicle vaccine’. As a general rule, for every 1 km/h reduction in average traffic speed, we observe a 3% reduction in collisions. ISA helps drivers to conform with safe speeds and saves them money by improving fuel efficiency. It mitigates the risk of unintentional lapses in concentration that can lead to expensive speeding fines and license endorsements – keeping us all mobile and working. ISA is a superpower for two reasons. Firstly, it makes ADAS features and crashworthiness measures more effective in the real world. Secondly, it begins to tackle the existential global warming and climate change crisis we are facing by directly reducing transport energy consumption and carbon emissions. Thank you Global NCAP for inviting TRL to be part of the innovative and brave #GlobaI_ISA_Partnership initiative. I am imagining the next EU package of safety measures (GSR3) being integrated with environmental requirements - a system approach, grounded on pragmatic solutions, striving for #visionzero and #netzero.

“ISA is a superpower. “If a pedestrian steps out in front of your car, #AEB combined with ISA’s speed reduction will give the pedestrian a far greater chance of survival and avoid life changing injuries when involved in a crash." Richard Cuerden, Director, TRL Academy, explains the life saving benefits of #ISA at #NCAP24. #ForSaferJourneys

“Global NCAP has made a major impact in India by educating the consumer on vehicle safety and it has been a cornerstone in establishing Bharat NCAP. “Looking back to 2010, India did not even have airbags in most cars. It only took 10 years to implement legislation for airbags and technologies such as #ABS and #ESC in India. It took almost 25 years in Europe. “Thank you Global NCAP for helping India to get safer vehicles on the roads.” Girikumar Kumaresh, Bosch India at #NCAP24. #ForSaferJourneys #SaferCarsForIndia

“Speed is a critical factor in most crashes. Speed Assistance is a technology which can help drivers respect the speed limit. A vital contribution to road safety. “We need a partnership with all the stakeholders, the manufacturers, authorities, working together to encourage this technology, to help contribute to reducing deaths on the road.” David Ward from the Towards Zero Foundation and Yoni Epstein from Mobileye explain the importance of this technology and the role of the new ISA Partnership. #NCAP24 #ForSaferJourneys
