“The UK has a responsibility to help other countries halt and reverse nature degradation, decarbonise and adapt to the consequences of climate change.” In this new LSE British Politics and Policy blog, Daisy Jameson and Esin Serin argue that the increased focus on defence spending in the Spring Statement should not come at the expense of urgent investment in clean energy and resilience at home or abroad.

We are looking for a Policy Officer to join the Institute’s team working with the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance - a multi-sector partnership working to enhance resilience to climate hazards in rural and urban communities in fifteen countries. We want to recruit someone to support our contribution to the Adaptation Governance theme of the Alliance, including developing research-based policy insights and delivering capacity building sessions focused on a variety of adaptation governance topics. The postholder will also contribute to major research projects by analysing national adaptation plans and policies to investigate global trends in adaptation legislation, best practices and persistent gaps, and identify enabling conditions to strengthen adaptation policies across countries. The Chancellor Rachel Reeves gave her Spring Statement yesterday. In it she confirmed the government will be committing £2.2bn of extra spending to defence, alongside cutting the aid budget. In a comment to the Big Issue, Bob Ward has labelled this decision “inexcusable and likely to create long-lasting damage to the UK”. Ward continued: “The Labour Party committed in its election manifesto to increasing the aid budget and could have raised taxes or borrowed more to increase on defence, instead of joining the Trump administration in penalising the world’s poorest people. This will hurt poor people and further damage our reputation and influence with developing countries.”

Yesterday, Pallavi Sethi spoke at the Climate Information Integrity Summit in Brazil, organised by FALA - estúdio de Impacto, Conscious Advertising Network and Climate Action Against Disinformation. She spoke about how parts of the British press are failing to meet the standards of accuracy, particularly in their coverage of the UK’s climate change policies: “Instead of climate denial we are seeing policy scepticism. Editorial and opinion sections of certain British newspapers are accepting the reality of climate change. However, they are using tactics to discredit climate solutions and question the urgency of climate action."

We have two great events taking place this week. 📆 On Tuesday, 25th March we’re hosting a hybrid panel discussion on the landmark climate litigation case, Luciano Lliuya v RWE. In this groundbreaking legal dispute, a Peruvian farmer seeks to hold a major German energy company accountable for its contribution to climate change impacts in Peru—potentially setting a powerful new precedent for corporate climate responsibility. The event, in collaboration with Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment will feature Saúl Luciano Lliuya, the claimant himself, who will offer firsthand insights into his legal dispute with RWE. ……… 📆 Join us on Thursday March 27th for an event celebrating the 80th birthday and distinguished legal career of Lord Robert Carnwath of Notting Hill, CVO, retired Justice of the UK Supreme Court. Lord Carnwath will give a short lecture reflecting on the role of the courts, at home and abroad, in the development of environmental and climate change law over the last two decades. The event will also include a Q&A session moderated by Joana Setzer You can find out more about the events and sign up here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/euDbmKbu

Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment reposted this
Earlier this week we hosted a webinar on Industrial decarbonisation. It started with a discussion summarizing the economic, legal, trade and international political aspects of the concept of complimenting the EU Emissions Trading System and Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism with a climate contribution. This was followed by perspectives from policy makers and key stakeholders. If you couldn’t make it to the event, the video is now live.
