It was really interesting to attend the Aerospace Technology Institute Manufacturing Net Zero Aviation event last week at The University of Sheffield. There was a great programme of insightful presentations and discussion on applying LCA in aerospace manufacturing, the challenges, especially good data, upstream supply chain transparency, the varying grid mix. All developing good practice for a more sustainable future. I presented the environmental assessment for Project MONET, looking at alternative low/zero carbon powertrains for the Swift Aircraft in the context of a training aircraft for the Royal Air Force (RAF). It's a great case study on the challenges of assessing the impacts of novel technologies into the future. (Contact me for more info, or if you'd like the slides as the sun was shining on the screen!) Highlights for me? - Emelia Fabris on the excellent work at Airbus on LCA and Ecodesign. - The panel discussion (ably led by Katerina Christofidou) and particularly the potential to develop good practice and create a common framework for LCA through the International Aerospace Environmental Group ® (IAEG), expressed by Phill Godfrey Also meeting up with Conchúr Ó Brádaigh FREng FRSE and Fanran Meng who I hadn't seen in real life for a long time. Thanks Matthew Bailey, Angelo Emmi, Kathy and the team at Henry Royce Institute for all the organising - in which I played a very small part, but it was great to be involved in such a strategic event. Photo credit: Ben Orson - thanks Ben! I also love what you've done with the Air Canada project. #LCA #aerospace #manufacturing #sustainability #netzero
