September is Achalasia Awareness Month.💚 Achalasia affects 1 in 100,000 people, meaning it is rare. Although it is rare, it is crucial we raise awareness because for the people affected by it, it is very real. And it needs to be more known. It affects the nerves and muscles of the oesophagus (food pipe), mainly at the lower end where it meets the stomach, making it hard for food and fluids to pass through. This can lead to difficulty swallowing, and for many, it means enduring daily challenges that are both physically and mentally exhausting. You see me smiling and having fun. It might look like everything is going well. Behind that smile, there’s more to my story. Living with a digestive condition often means hiding the daily struggles that aren't visible in a snapshot. What you don’t see is the pain and discomfort I go through. Some days, just getting out of bed can be a big challenge. It’s hard to explain the fatigue or the frustration of not being able to enjoy a meal like everyone else. These invisible symptoms can weigh heavily on my life, and it’s tough to show this side of the story online. You’re not alone. At Guts UK, we’re here to support you and raise awareness about the reality of living with digestive symptoms or conditions. It's important to be kind and understanding, recognising that not all challenges are visible. Offer a helping hand, lend a listening ear, and be gentle with yourself and others.
