Interesting visit to Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London with Guy's & St Thomas' Foundation, Oxford Properties Group and REEF. They have plans for a major redevelopment on the Guys site and neighbouring buildings which will create space for the next generation of health and life science businesses. This BioMedical hub s part of the wider SC1 London Health and Life Sciences Innovation District, in addition to the current Royal Street project working with Stanhope PLC next to the St Thomas's Westminster Bridge site. Good to meet the team including Laurie Lee of Guys and St Thomas Foundation, Emma Downey, Director of Development in Health and Life Sciences for Oxford Properties Group, Peter Langly-Smith, Managing Director of REEF, and Louis Vine, Corp Comms Lead at the Foundation. Also great to catch up with Nadia Broccardo and Team London Bridge at their offices. Thanks to Heidi Stokes for organising and for the photos. Health and life sciences are one of the most important growth sectors for London - with 6m sq ft of new lab space coming on stream, and 8 university/hospital systems, 54 universities in total, plus 1300 AI businesses, London is rapidly becoming one of the world's most important centres of health innovation. This will be reflected in the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan Growth Plan written with London Councils, launching on Thursday this week.

  • Recent estimates show that the global cost of health damages from air pollution is a staggering US$8.1 trillion, equivalent to 6.1% of the world's GDP. If we don’t act now, approximately 3.8 billion workdays could be lost due to air pollution by 2060. Businesses have a crucial role to play in combating this issue. By embracing cleaner technologies, they can significantly reduce air pollution and contribute to a healthier future for all. That’s why we launched a consultation with the UK’s largest charity asset manager, CCLA Investment Management, to drive investor action to tackle corporate air pollution. Only one week remains to join our consultation and share your insights. Your contributions will help create a benchmark for comparing companies' air pollution management practices and guide investor engagement and policy recommendations. 👉 Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/e_SC8k_b #AirQuality #AirPollution #ResponsibleInvesting

  • Over the past decade, health inequalities have led to over a million premature deaths in England. As these disparities continue to widen, the need to focus on the social determinants of health is stronger than ever. At Guy's & St Thomas’ Foundation, our vision is a society where everyone stays healthier for longer. As custodians of one of the UK's largest charitable endowments, we invest with a Dual Mandate: achieving financial returns and creating wider positive impact to tackle inequalities head-on. By doing this, every pound of capital invested enables economic growth. Every business that our capital funds has the potential to affect social health outcomes positively. We believe that businesses can be a force for good. We do not have all the answers, but we are committed to investing responsibly and supporting partners who share our vision. For example, our investments, like KHP Ventures, aim to improve patient care within the NHS alongside our three NHS charities: Guy's & St Thomas' Charity, Guy's Cancer Charity, and Evelina London Children's Charity. Additionally, our colleagues at Impact on Urban Health Impact on Urban Health aim to address the social determinants of health – whether by supporting initiatives that mitigate health inequalities, such as improving children’s access to food, or finding innovative solutions to the effects of air pollution. 🤝 Together, we can help create a healthier, fairer future. Long-term exposure to air pollution has an effect equivalent to up to 43,000 adult deaths a year in the UK. To play our part in addressing this, we’ve launched a consultation with the UK’s largest charity asset manager, CCLA Investment Management, to drive investor action to tackle corporate air pollution. Businesses and investors are uniquely placed to reduce air pollution by embracing cleaner technologies, which can better position them for future growth and regulatory changes. Our aim is to create a benchmark that transparently compares companies’ air pollution management, backed by coordinated investor engagement and collective policies. Matt Lomas, Our Engagement Director for Investment explains: 💬 “Air quality should be a concern for investors given the impact poor air quality has on people, planet and increasingly businesses as companies’ contributions become more understood. We know that by working together as investors we can work with companies to reduce their negative impacts on the environment and health. Alongside CCLA we are calling on investors and businesses to come together to put air pollution on their sustainability agendas. We believe that via collaboration we can take meaningful action, and in doing so, have a significant positive impact for people and planet as well as business resilience.” This initiative is part of our 10-year philanthropic program to improve air quality in urban areas. The consultation is open for responses until December 17 and is supported by Chronos Sustainability. • “We believe that our ownership of investment decisions allows us to amplify our mission and deliver impact beyond what has been achieved by our grant-giving and charitable work. Our endowment is a powerful tool that we can use demonstrate that better is possible.” At Guy's & St Thomas' Foundation, we believe that better health for all is within our reach. In an article for Civil Society Media Ltd our Chief Investment Officer, Emma Davies, outlines our investment philosophy and dual mandate approach to producing financial returns alongside wider positive impact.
