  • Navantia UK today announces the completion of its acquisition of Harland & Wolff’s facilities in Belfast, Appledore, Methil and Arnish, protecting more than 1,000 jobs across the four sites and strengthening Britain’s defence, maritime and clean energy industrial capabilities. Under Navantia UK’s management, all four facilities will benefit from extensive expertise in shipbuilding, fabrication and complex programme management, supporting both a highly skilled workforce and robust supply chain. The transaction ensures the continuation of the Fleet Solid Support (FSS) programme, comprising three ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary to support the UK Carrier Strike Group. These vessels will be built at the Belfast and Appledore facilities alongside Navantia’s facilities in Spain. Navantia UK plans significant development of the yards for the defence, maritime and green energy sectors.  Ricardo Domínguez Garcia-Baquero, Chairman of Navantia, S.A., S.M.E, said: “The completion of this acquisition marks a significant milestone for Navantia UK and demonstrates our long-term commitment to UK industry. By combining Harland & Wolff’s proud heritage and facilities with Navantia’s global expertise in defence, maritime and renewable energy, we are creating an exceptional platform for growth.” Navantia UK extends its gratitude to His Majesty’s Government for its support throughout this process, which has helped secure this strategic investment in UK industrial capability. The transaction has received all necessary regulatory approvals. All current employees have transferred to Navantia UK with their existing terms and conditions preserved. The transaction was supported by independent advisers Alantra, Clifford Chance, TLT and KPMG among others, who assisted Navantia with commercial negotiations and documentation. • Harland & Wolff recently welcomed the research vessel RV Corystes to our Belfast facility for her annual dry-docking and maintenance period. Working in close partnership with vessel managers Heyn Engineering, on behalf of the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute, our team will undertake a comprehensive programme of works, including steelwork repairs and painting, over a 10-day period. The RV Corystes fulfils a vital role in Northern Ireland's marine research, conducting regular surveys to monitor fish stocks, analyse seabed conditions and assess the overall health of our local waters. These data support sustainable fisheries management and help safeguard our marine ecosystem. Operating primarily in the Irish Sea, she carries specialised equipment for oceanographic research, including advanced sonar systems and sampling apparatus that enable scientists to study everything from fish populations to water quality. We are proud of our longstanding relationship with Heyn Engineering and are delighted to support another local Northern Irish company in maintaining this important research vessel. In a major milestone, yesterday morning saw the safe delivery of the completed underframe for Ulster Railway Saloon No. 33 to Downpatrick. The project, undertaken by Harland & Wolff, saw their skilled apprentices and team led by Brian Welsh create a replica underframe out of steel provided by long time DCDR supporters, Walter Watsons Steel Stockholders, showcasing the company’s enduring legacy of engineering excellence and passing on heritage skills to the next generation. Following lots of photos, and congratulatory handshakes, it was hoisted in the air by a mini-Golaith crane (and not its big brother out the dry dock - that may have been overkill) with ease, it was gently placed on a flatbed trailer from M Large Tree Services, who've previously moved bogies for us. We once again extend our sincere thanks to Brian and the H&W apprentices for their dedication and craftsmanship in bringing this project to fruition. We’re excited to take the next steps in the restoration journey - which is basically stripping the donor frame and completing a giant meccano set.
