Hospitals and Health Care

About us

Helen & Douglas House is a registered charity caring for terminally ill babies, children, and young people. We provide medical, emotional and practical support, helping families deal with the implications of living with a child who will die prematurely, so they can make the most of their time together. As a charity, we rely almost entirely on donations to support our families. We cannot do this without your help.

  • 🧡 Today is Random Acts Of Kindness Day. 🧡 To celebrate this day, Pippa, who comes to Helen & Douglas House for respite care, has been a busy bee spreading joy. She made some beautiful flower gifts with Chloe from our play team and attached a special message to each one. And then off Pippa went to deliver these special gifts to the staff at Helen & Douglas House, bringing smiles and joy to everyone she met. What a wonderful way to start the week. 🌷 Why not brighten someone’s day today? A little kindness goes a long way. #RandomActsOfKindnessDay #HospiceCare

Ben, a member of the group, is running the iconic London Marathon to raise money for Helen & Douglas House. To help Ben reach his £2,500 fundraising target, the group are putting on a one-off concert at the O’Reilly Theatre, Keble College on Thursday 13th March at 7:30pm. 𝗕𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱: "The opportunity to support Helen & Douglas House is a personal honour. I was particularly moved following a performance at the hospice in February 2024 to a couple of the children, their families, and the staff onsite. It's really comforting to know that we as a group are able to provide a moment of joy to families during such difficult times. I hope that by running this year, I can raise money for, and further highlight the exceptional work that Helen & Douglas House undertake." You can show your support by buying tickets to their fabulous concert - https://lnkd.in/eMyGHEtz Good luck running the marathon in April Ben - the Helen & Douglas House team will be cheering you on at the finish line! 🧡

  • Celebrating sibling love this #ValentinesDay. 💕 The bond between siblings is unbreakable. But when a brother or sister is facing a life-shortening condition, that love can also come with worry, stress, and uncertainty. At Helen & Douglas House, we provide a safe, supportive space where siblings can talk, play, and create happy memories together - whether through stay and play sessions, family trips, or special holiday activities. This Valentine’s Day, some of the children in our care have made beautiful cards to take home to their siblings, a small but meaningful way to say, "I love you." Here are some lovely moments of sibling love captured at Helen & Douglas House over the years. 📸 Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

  • To celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science today, we want to share the inpirational work that one of our doctors, Dr Charlotte, has been contributing to in the paediatric palliative care space. This year, after a successful 3rd series in 2024, she is hosting another enlightening series called 'Spotlight On' - which looks at the challenges and ethics around different aspects of paediatric palliative care alongside some incredible healthcare professionals - including our own nursing and medical teams who have been guest speakers in previous series'! If you'd like to join one of her future webinars from her 'Spotlight On' series this year, please contact istephenson@helenanddouglas.org.uk You can find out more about these webinars here https://lnkd.in/e9kWPvG4

  • This week is Children's Mental Health Week For "Diego", coming to Network Saturdays, a group for teens to meet and socialise, has been transformative for his confidence. Since first going along a few years ago, he has formed a close bond with the other children who even have a WhatsApp group to keep in touch. From film nights, to gaming sessions and weekend sleepovers with ice cream trips and escape rooms, Network Saturday groups are a place where teens can relax and be a kid again without the worries and stresses of normal life. Emma and Polly, our Youth and Transition workers support them in the transition from children's to adult services, and use these sessions to build trusting relationships with each of them
