From Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s industrial past to present day 🏭 This 1944 photo of Carpenters Road vividly captures the industrial history of the Park, with factory chimneys sending thick plumes of smoke skyward and rail yards poised to transport goods across the nation. The photo prominently features the Yardley of London perfume factory. Today, you can still spot one of its original buildings, Warton House, on Stratford High Street, adorned with a beautiful mosaic of lavender sellers on its exterior. Just down the road from there lies the Bow Flyover, once called "Stinkhouse Bridge" due to the overpowering stench from nearby chemical works, the perfume factory, and a glue factory that processed bones gathered by rag-and-bone men. Locals even referred to Carpenters Road as "Stink Bomb Alley"! Today, Carpenters Road and surrounding areas are still a thriving business hub, transformed by the legacy of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Businesses, both large and small, have made the Park a powerhouse of creativity and innovation, benefiting not only east Londoners but the wider population. From East Bank (pictured, with Carpenters Road situated behind) - the UK’s largest cultural quarter since the opening of the South Kensington Museums in the 19th century - to the trailblazers at HERE EAST and Plexal. The park is a place where culture, life sciences, and education converge, driving positive change for society. Follow us to keep up with all the huge things happening on the Park!

Last year, the UK hosted the first AI Safety Summit, convening global leaders to explore the risks and opportunities of frontier AI technologies, setting a template for the path ahead. But one year on, are concerns about costs and security stalling the growth of generative AI? 📈 With recent reports revealing business appetite for boosting AI spending over the next year has dropped by 30% since last year, we were pleased to see business leaders gather in Plexal at Here East yesterday for an event interrogating how this growth trajectory is evolving. Hosted by Plexal and supported by Tech London Advocates & Global Tech Advocates, “AI: A Trick or Treat for Businesses?” saw expert panellists David Sully – CEO and Co-Founder at Advai; Joshua Walter – Partner at Osney Capital; and Dr Magda Chelly – Co-Founder at RiskImmune (By RC) come together to discuss: 🗣️ How is uptake for AI changing? 🗣️ How is regulation impacting innovation? 🗣️ How is AI being used both positively and negatively? As champions of collaboration between government, startups and industry, Plexal are experts in supporting organisations to navigate it and adopt AI safely and inclusively. So as the frontier tech landscape shifts in unexpected ways, we’re proud to have them leading conversations at Here East on how to navigate it – underscoring how AI can be harnessed to unlock growth going forward 👏 Saj Huq | Andrew Roughan | Gavin Poole | Michael Magan | #AI | #ArtificialIntelligence | #Government | #Innovation | #Tech

The festive season is a moment for togetherness. But for many it can be a time of the year that exacerbates challenges, barriers, and isolation. Our charity partner, BADU CIC, is dedicated to helping hundreds of families in our local community this festive period; delivering seasonal hampers through their “That Moment When” campaign. Last year this campaign supported 230 underserved families ➡️ this year their goal is to help over 300. Whether it’s ingredients for a festive dinner, warm clothing, or toys for children, this campaign not only offers a helping hand to families who may be grappling with the cost-of-living crisis, but also a sense of belonging, hope, and a feeling that they are part of something bigger. We are incredibly proud to partner with Badu and support this mission. To learn more, attend the next Here East Community Coffee Morning hosted by Badu on 12 November from 9:30am in the Press Centre Reception. “More broadly across East London – but with the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park at its centre – the regeneration of this part of London has been the most successful regeneration story across Europe.” From 2012 Olympic infrastructure to East London's hub of innovation, culture, and collaboration. The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and surrounding area is an example of how investing in existing infrastructure can unlock game-changing impact and economic growth. We were thrilled to invite former Chancellor and Political Currency host, George Osborne to explore this landscape further at #TheFutureisNow this month – our event celebrating East London’s unique ecosystem of creativity, education, and technology and how we can #UnlockGrowth in this next chapter. Drawing parallels between the past and future opportunities and challenges of infrastructure investment in the UK, George shared more on how this can drive economic development in London and beyond, and what the government should do in the run-up to the Autumn Budget next week. The Here East Scholarship Programme has been opening pathways for local young people to study at the world-leading universities based on our campus for the last four years. Selcuk Kai Zorlu started his journey with us in 2023. When we spoke to him last year at the beginning of his University career, he described winning the scholarship as “an opportunity of a lifetime.” Now a year into his degree in Acting and Performance at LMA, we were pleased to catch up with Selcuk to see how he’s getting on ⬇️ 🚀 How has the scholarship shaped your journey so far? “It has allowed me to focus on my craft without having financial stress. The scholarship has opened doors I wouldn’t have had access to otherwise, pushed me to step out of my comfort zone, and helped me gain more confidence in not only my skills – but also myself as a person.” 🎬 What are your ambitions for the future? “I want to pursue a career in film acting, with a focus on stage and theatre. My next step is to start building a portfolio and get more involved in productions.” 🤝 How has being part of Here East helped? “Being part of this community has been amazing – I’ve met so many talented people and built connections that have helped me grow professionally.” 💡 What’s your advice for other young East Londoners and prospective students? “Whether it’s classes, workshops, or meeting new people; my advice is to take every opportunity that comes your way. Here East offers so many resources – make sure you make the most of them.” We can’t wait to see Selcuk's career on the screen and stage unfold!
