Architecture and Planning
RESPECTING THE PAST, EMBRACING THE PRESENT, BUILDING THE FUTURE.
About us
Stephen Levrant Heritage Architecture is the continuation of a specialist practice originally founded in 1948, we carry out selective conservation projects to the highest standards. We work in planning/urban design and in practical project construction exclusively within the historic cultural environment and on a wide range of historic buildings and conservation areas. Our surveys, appraisals and inspections are renowned for an intricate and holistic approach. We strive to promote quality with imagination and flair, where solutions for modern buildings in sensitive areas are always dictated by context. The practice philosophy is based upon the SPAB principles of conservation and repair rather than replacement and renewal. The art of conservation is dependant upon knowledge and experience of historic methods of construction, decoration and furnishing and a discerning eye for detail. This historical accuracy is fundamental to all our heritage projects.

Another new addition here at the London office! Isobel Conlon has recently joined us for a 3-month internship as winner of the Stephen Levrant Prize at the University of York. The experience will hopefully provide her with invaluable industry experience, working alongside a multidisciplinary team who are passionate about heritage. Isobel recently completed her studies for the Conservation of Historic Buildings MA, during which time she undertook a shorter placement with the HA London office. Her interest in the changing nature of the built environment was sparked by her undergraduate degree in History, graduating 2019. Isobel is looking forward to advancing the conservation knowledge and research skills developed through the Masters course and learning more about the workings of an architectural practice. Our Manchester office are thrilled to welcome Blacklock to the city centre, and they were really excited to have been invited recently to trial their amazing menu! 🤤 Heritage Architecture were commissioned to provide heritage and design advice to the team, culminating in a heritage appraisal and heritage statement to accompany the required listed building consent application for the refurbishment/conversion of the lower ground floor level (including ground floor entrance) of the Grade II listed 37 Peter Street, Manchester. 37 Peter Street was originally built as a packing warehouse for prominent merchants the Ralli Brothers in 1868, which became one of the most successful expatriate Greek merchant business of the 19th century, and was designed by notable local architects Clegg and Knowles in an Italian Palazzo style, utilising a buff sandstone to the primary elevations and red brick to the secondary, rear elevation. As part of our archival research, a single historic photograph from 1914 illustrated the original octagonal panelled entrance doors, which were removed in the 1920s, that enabled us to advise and help design contemporary versions to be reinstalled as the new restaurant entrance, thus helping to restore a sense of the original appearance of the warehouse and make an interesting and inviting street presence into the new restaurant. We also advised on appropriate new external lighting in order to replace inappropriate examples with units that were sensitive to the listed building’s character and features, but that would have a modern take. Great to see the progress of the redevelopment and restoration of the Grade II listed Pall Mall Court, King Street, Manchester coming on leaps and bounds! Our Manchester office have been involved with this amazing 1960's office building since 2015, with the current consented scheme seeing yet another quirky mid-century building being added to Bruntwood's portfolio. Pall Mall Court was designed by architects Brett & Pollen and was constructed between 1966 and 1968 as a purpose-built office block. The office building is one of Manchester’s most recent listed buildings, and forms a dramatic brown-coloured, smoky glass structure that was designed to be facetted like a piece of jet. The current scheme designed by Sheppard Robson for Bruntwood will see the inherently poor planform and circulation spaces improved, whilst creating a new main entrance opening out onto the rear piazza to help activate this underused area. Other interventions include the replacement of the building’s windows with accurate reproductions and the repair of the original external and internal black mosaics and blue brick. We have really enjoyed working with Sheppard Robson as architects, Bruntwood as the client and with Deloitte LLP as planners on this reinvention of a retro classic! Swangrove House – One of our team was lucky enough to visit the privately owned, Grade I, Swangrove House on the Badminton Estate recently. Built in c.1703 by Bath architect William Killigrew as a hunting lodge in local Cotswold stone, with gables, castellations and pepper pots for the Duke of Beaufort. The piece de resistance is the belvedere at the top, providing views on both sides for spectators to watch the hunting. #bath #architect #architecture #cotswoldstone #heritage #listedbuilding
