Is your Hazard Record (Hazard Log) spiraling out of control without you even realizing it? It's possible! Without rigorous control and review, it's common for entries to creep into the thousands (yes, really)! Duplicated entries, poorly defined (or plain wrong) records, and inadequate control throughout the project lifecycle are all too common. You won't win prizes for having the most entries in your hazard record/log; in fact, it may mask key hazardous situations and make your system less safe. Each entry needs thorough management to ensure that any changes to hazardous situations or consequences throughout the project’s development are documented. Ensuring appropriate compliance statements and associated evidence is crucial. A last-minute slap-dash approach of quickly referencing a document number for a report hundreds of pages in length just before key project milestones is NOT the way to demonstrate safe integration with the existing railway network. This approach can (and probably should) lead to unsupportive Safety Assessment Reports from the AsBo and subsequent SRP endorsements being withheld. At HSRS, we have facilitated the role of Hazard Record Manager for numerous complex and large-scale railway infrastructure projects. If you need assistance with your Hazard Record, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Read more in our latest blog post: https://lnkd.in/gKDWjcrp #HazardRecord #HazardLog

Today, for our Black History Month 2024 campaign, we’re honoring the contributions of Canadian sleeping car conductors and celebrating George V. Garraway, who became Canada’s first Black train conductor in 1954. His achievement was made possible by the Order of Sleeping Car Porters (OSCP), North America's first Black labour union, which fought for equality and fair treatment. After the abolition of slavery, Black men in both the U.S. and Canada faced limited job opportunities due to systemic racism. Many worked as train porters, enduring long hours, low pay, and challenging conditions, but they were crucial to the success of Pullman sleeper cars introduced in Canada in the 1870s. In 1917, Black porters formed the Order of Sleeping Car Porters OSCP (the first black labour union in North America) to push for better wages and working conditions, leading to contracts with Canadian National Railway in 1919. However, barriers remained for Black workers to advance to roles like conductor, reserved for white men. In 1953, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) intervened, resulting in Garraway’s historic appointment. The resilience of these porters not only improved working conditions but paved the way for future generations, leaving a lasting legacy in the fight for labour rights and racial equality in Canada. Their story reminds us of the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion today. Let’s continue honouring their legacy by driving progress in all areas of our work. 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀𝗼𝗻 As part of our Black History Month Pioneers campaign at HSRS, we would like to celebrate the achievements of Wilston Samuel Jackson, a trailblazing member of the Windrush Generation and Britain’s first Black train driver. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1927, Wilston had dreams of becoming a dentist as a boy. Tragically, at age 17, his father passed away unexpectedly, forcing Wilston to alter his plans and let go of his childhood dream. He migrated to the UK in 1951 as part of the Windrush Generation, who played a pivotal role in helping to rebuild Britain after the Second World War. Upon arrival in his new home, Wilston confronted entrenched prejudice and racism across society. Undeterred, he was determined to make a new life for himself in the UK and joined the railway industry as a fireman/labourer, shoveling coal on steam engines, and later became a cleaner. It was in these roles that he fell in love with locomotives and made it his mission to become a driver. At the time, there was an unofficial but well-known white-only policy for drivers, but through sheer determination and hard work, he persevered, passed his driver's exams, and became the UK's first Black train driver. He faced significant prejudice from some workers, who refused to work under a Black man and even went as far as organizing to forbid any white man from working with him. However, he was supported by a supervisor who famously made it clear that anyone who refused to work under Wilston would be out of a job. This highlights the importance of allies who stand against discrimination in the workplace and society as a whole. Wilston built a reputation as a conscientious worker who never missed a day’s work and was never late. He drove some of the UK’s most iconic locomotives, including the Mallard and Flying Scotsman. In 2018, a year before his death, Wilston was commemorated with a plaque at the offices of King’s Cross Station. https://lnkd.in/dRX_GMW #BlackHistoryMonth2024 #ReclaimingNarratives #Windrush #EDI #HighSpeedRailSolutions

This year at High Speed Rail Solutions, we are supporting #BlackHistoryMonth2024, and in line with this year’s theme, "Reclaiming Narratives", we will be running a campaign shining a light on pioneers of Black origin who have made significant contributions to the Rail Industry, Science & Technology, such as Trudy Aarons (the first female Black train driver in the U.K.), Elijah McCoy (inventor of the automatic lubricator for steam engines), William Hunter Dummond (inventor of electrical track circuit signaling systems), and Katherine Johnson (NASA scientist and mathematician whose work contributed to the Apollo 13 moon landing), among others. Special thanks to our U.K.-based team: Spencer Senda Jr. BSC (Hons) MIET, Oi Ki Cheung CEng MICE, Peter Williams, and Fooad El-sayed, and our Canadian-based team: Somto Okwara and Sue McCauley MSc CCISO CSIRP, for their contributions to this initiative. Yesterday, Peter Williams and Michael Hinton proudly took part in the #HOPEWALK in Swindon for #WorldMentalHealthDay, raising awareness for suicide prevention. Peter shared, "Having recently experienced the loss of someone very dear to me to suicide, I was keen to do something that could help others. The HOPEWALK with Papyrus has given me that first opportunity." HSRS stands with PAPYRUS in their mission to prevent young suicides. If you or someone you know needs support, PAPYRUS’s HOPELINE247 advisers are available 24/7. Call 0800 068 4141, text 88247, or email pat@papyrus-uk.org. 🌟 Quarterly Brief Recap: Better Every Day 🌟 Yesterday, we gathered for our Quarterly Brief, centered around the theme Better Everyday—a theme that resonates deeply with our commitment to continuous improvement in both our work and well-being. We began with a poignant Safety Moment, reflecting on the latest findings from the Grenfell Tower inquiry. This served as a powerful reminder of the importance of safety in everything we do. We also took a moment to celebrate our achievements from the last quarter. It’s incredible to see the progress we’ve made together as a team! A highlight of the brief was a guest speaker session with Alex Hills from PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide. Alex provided invaluable awareness training on suicide prevention among young people, a topic that is both crucial and close to our hearts. A special shoutout to Fooad El-sayed and Oliver McCauley for their hard work in preparing this session, and to Michael Hinton for suggesting the talk on Papyrus - Prevention of Young Suicide. Together, we are committed to making every day better, for ourselves and for those around us. 🌱💪 Check out the full blog: https://lnkd.in/g7zdhRR7 #BetterEveryDay #QuarterlyBrief #TeamAchievements #WellBeing #SafetyFirst #SuicidePrevention #ContinuousImprovement
