Houlder recently teamed up with Siem Car Carriers to explore ways to cut fuel consumption and carbon emissions across two of Siem’s car carriers. Starting with baseline calculations for fuel consumption and emissions, our project then investigated the potential of various energy-saving devices (ESDs). We assessed options including post-swirl stator modifications, adjustments to the bulbous bow, the addition of a ducktail, air lubrication systems, and advanced silicone-based coatings. Ultimately, the ducktail modification emerged as the most promising choice. Through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, we validated its effectiveness by examining the potential reduction in power needs under typical sea conditions. The result? Substantial fuel savings and emissions reductions achieved through close collaboration between Houlder and Siem. You can watch Siem’s video below, featuring the newly fitted ducktail on the Siem Curie in action. #Shipping #Maritime #Decarbonisation #Sustainability #Cleantech #Hydrodynamics

Yesterday, Houlder Ltd attended a landmark event held by Smart Green Shipping for the unveiling of the FastRig, installed on the MV Pacific Grebe. The vessel has completed its first leg of sea trials and arrived in Southampton. The event showcased the FastRig Windsail and marks the completion of the project. This has been a brilliant assignment for Houlder to be involved with. It was a triumph for collaboration, bringing multi-faceted engineering skills and experience to bear to help create this innovative technology. Congratulations to Smart Green Shipping. #Windsofchange #WindPropulsion #Windsail #Shipping

Adam Alcantara our Technical Manager will be attending Wind Propulsion 2024 next week.
I will be attending Wind Propulsion 2024 next Wednesday, 23rd October. Looking forward to hearing about the current use of alternative fuels and renewable energy sources within the shipping industry. Amongst the latest modern technology, the maritime industry is now turning their attention to one of the oldest concepts in shipping: using wind for natural ship propulsion. A concept that my work within Houlder Limited will help harness as a ‘renewable energy’. With the day full of panel discussions, keynote speakers and networking. I am looking forward to the day as new members of International Windship Association. #WindPropulsion #RINA #InternationalWindshipAssociation #Alternativefuels

Director for Stability & Statutory at Houlder Ltd; Chartered Naval Architect and specialising in vessel stability
Yesterday I had the chance to return to the Ship Tank at the QinetiQ Haslar site for some work for Houlder Limited. It was a pleasure to go back and see many familiar faces. It is a place I know very well from my first job as a Naval Architect graduate after University. I chose a Naval Architecture degree after building radio controlled model boats at school, so it was a natural fit for my first engineering job to be spent testing models in this tank and their Ocean Basin.

We’re working with Wightlink on a statutory drawing pack for St. Clare's upcoming refit. James Hicks deck manager for Wightlink provided the Houlder team with the following feedback from the project. “Thank you very much to the team for working to a tight deadline, your professionalism and your prompt responses throughout this process. It’s been an absolute pleasure to deal with Houlder on this project”. We really value client feedback, and it is always nice to hear how we have helped. Wightlink | Isle of Wight Ferries

Yesterday, UK Chamber of Shipping hosted Shipping UK 2024 Conference in London. Attending from Houlder Ltd - Rupert Hare, Andy King and Imogen hill. The day was full of great conversations with Carnival, Shell, P&O Ferries, Isle of Scilly Group and others. Multiple networking sessions provided the perfect opportunity to catch up with familiar faces in the industry and meeting new contacts. Informative panel discussions took place throughout the day on various topics - strong themes included Decarbonisation, Geopolitics, Economics and the need for more collaboration across the industry to reach targets set for 2030 and beyond. Echoing these themes, we heard from Secretary of State for Transport, Louise Haigh who spoke personally about her connection with the Maritime industry and her commitment to put Maritime at the heart of her programme. She promised to help with the infrastructure needed to achieve decarbonation targets and to attract younger people to the industry through various educational routes. The whole day was run well, sparking interesting conversations. Thank you to The Chamber of shipping for hosting. #Maritime #Decarbosation #ShippingUK Carnival Corporation Shell P&O Ferries Isles of Scilly Steamship Group DNV Wärtsilä
