Working with the new government at Housing 2025 Leadership Symposium After three days in Liverpool, listening to more sessions on housing than any party conference in living memory, we are delighted to see how their message resonated with ours for the launch of the NEW Leadership Symposium. We are all committed to raising the voice of the #UKhousing sector and creating #newhomes and #thrivingcommunities and we believe that the solutions to today’s #housingcrisis lie in #innovativepartnerships, #sustainablepractices, and #inclusivepolicies. Together, we can build a future where #highquality, #accessible, and #affordablehousing is a reality for all. A few of my takeaways... Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced a new council retrofit scheme and Wave 3 of rebranded #SHDF. Tom Copley told Inside Housing at the Labour Party Conference that the Greater London Authority is currently exploring sites to develop with public and private sector partners. The deputy mayor added that he believes the housing sector is “crying out” for more #risksharing to #acceleratedevelopment. “At the moment, what we’re concentrating on is looking at #jointventures and then looking as well at what we can do around #landassembly, buying land and things like that.” #PrimeMinister Sir Keir Starmer has promised to house all #veterans, #youngcareleavers and victims of #domesticabuse, and introduce a duty of candour law to parliament before April next year. “Homes will be there for heroes,” he added. “They will have the security they deserve. They will have a roof over their head because Britain belongs to them.” Angela Rayner used her opening speech at the #LabourPartyConference to announce a new #claddingremediation plan and accountability to deliver ‘faster #repairs and complaints.’ At the conference, the housing secretary said: “We will also ensure social housing staff have the right skills and experience. And I will ensure 2.5 million housing association tenants in this country can hold their landlord to account for their high-quality services and homes – so that repairs and complaints are handled faster, but more importantly, so social housing tenants are treated fairly.” Be part of the conversation, join us at the Housing 2025 Leadership Symposium; The only place for the UK housing and wider #livingsector to come together to #innovate, #invest and #influence. A crucial platform for senior housing professionals to discuss securing the investment that is so desperately needed, and to look at what kind of partnerships are likely to be most effective to deliver new homes and thriving communities. BREAKING | Government will need to build 450,000 new homes in a year by 2029 to meet 1.5 million new homes target. https://lnkd.in/e9Qn8j3U Our new report, the road map to 1.5 million new homes, identifies a policy timeline and target in-year figures for the government to meet their target of 1.5 million new homes by the end of the Parliament. Recognising that housing completions are due to slump to around 160,000 in the current year, it calculates that housing delivery will need to reach 450,000 in 2028/9 in order to achieve the 1.5 million target, a number not seen since 1968. Be sure to check out the full report to see our recommendations to government to address the UK's acute housing need.

We are in a housing crisis. That’s why we’re announcing part of our plan to get Britain building again. For too long, housebuilding has been too slow: increasing competition for a limited supply, driving up rents and leaving people unsure and discouraged about when they might finally have a place to call home. Our changes to the National Planning Policy Framework will mean working in partnership with local councils and streamlining the planning process, making it easier to build faster and build better, giving people the homes they need where they need them. Recruitment and retention of staff is repeatedly being flagged as one of the key risks to delivery identified by social landlords – and I want to flag how the sector is dealing with it and what is working. It was a top 5 issue in this year’s Inside Housing survey of housing association risk registers. And last week’s fantastic and important report by the London Homes Coalition suggested that without action housing associations and contractors in London would face a gap of 2,625 skilled individuals to deliver planned investments over the next five years. The North East Housing Partnership has identified a need for more green skills, and skills and employability is a key part of its prospectus. The West Yorkshire Housing Partnership and York and North Yorkshire Housing Partnership prospectuses have a similar focus – more on that in my interview with Nick Atkin (who is vice chair and chair respectively) next week. The skills gap and the need to prepare the sector for the future are one of the reasons we launched our #HousingHires campaign in May – and one of the reasons Housing 2024 held a jobs fair in June. Given the obvious scale of the issue it would be great to identify and share learning from the very best recruitment and retention initiatives from across the UK. Given the campaign, I’m particularly interested to see the entries in the recruitment and retention campaign of the year and resident employment and training categories. There’s one week left for entries (well, four working days!) and we’re looking for campaigns that will help us find out the approach organisations are taking and hopefully share learning. (Should say, other categories are available – and looking forward to reading your good practice stories about resident and community-led decision making, homelessness and financial inclusion, and older people’s housing). Would love to hear your stories if you are doing good work that other organisations could learn from. Entries close next week (full details on the link). #HousingHires #UKHousingAwards #UKHousing #HousingAssociation #LocalAuthorities Nick Atkin Fiona Fletcher Smith Elly H.
