How do you transform a simple 1937-built 2-storey carpenter’s workshop into an award-winning contemporary art gallery? It’s a story of recycling and reuse, involving 7 (yes seven!) design revisions to satisfy the planners! GroundWork Gallery in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, designed by Hudson Architects and built by NORFOLK BUILDING CO LTD, began as an ordinary light industrial building - the last of its kind in the town centre - and was transformed into a bright and inspiring space dedicated to art and the environment. Focused on nature, sustainability, and climate change, GroundWork Gallery hosts exhibitions and residencies that raise awareness of these causes. Want to know more? Hudson Architects is an award winning architecture and design practice based in Norwich and London. We offer a full range of architectural services, and create value and delight for our clients through clever and thoughtful design. While briefs and budgets may vary, our holistic approach consistently delivers distinctive and high quality buildings. Numerous repeat commissions are testament to our success and ability to create long lasting relationships with clients, for whom we have built extensively across the UK and around the world. We have experience across the residential, education, leisure and civic sectors, and enjoy all kinds of projects from ambitious contemporary design to sensitive interventions in historic buildings. Our portfolio includes private one-off homes, large and small scale housing projects, churches and music venues, schools and universities, offices and public spaces, leisure facilities and hotels. Our response to all projects is characterised by close attention to rich spatial and material qualities, consideration of our buildings’ impact on the environment, and a determination to address the ways in which users and clients occupy the spaces we design. We actively seek opportunities to work with other designers, decision-makers and the public to share our enthusiasm and believe that good design and thoughtful architecture makes a positive difference to everybody’s lives.

“The Fens may be Britain’s breadbasket, but it is also a huge source of greenhouse gases.” The pros and cons of the unique peatland geology of the Fens and a clever water table lifting solution to rewet the peat so #Norfolk can still be Britain’s largest producer of the cream of the crop: Romaine lettuces! An interesting article in The Times that links to our FibreBroads research project with the Broads Authority. 🌕 This year October's full Moon (the 'Hunter's Moon') happened just after midday today, on Thursday 17 October at 12.26pm. Set to be the brightest supermoon of the year, expect it to appear bigger and brighter than normal - and even up to 15% brighter and 30% bigger than 'regular' full Moons. 🤔 A great opportunity for some beautiful photos with the full Moon over some of our architectural projects, we're thinking... do let us know if you take any!
Moon over The Machrie 🌕 The Harvest Moon from earlier in the month was captured over Another Place, The Machrie on Islay by Ben Shakespeare, lighting up the championship golf course for the last few playing. Alongside a brilliant team of consultants and specialists, Hudson Architects previously delivered a full refurbishment of The Machrie, retaining the original building façade while creating a chevron-shaped south-facing extension. The project won several awards and The Machrie itself won Scottish Hotel of the Year in 2020. Read more about this project on our website - link in comment.
