  • Continuing the dive into some of Hull’s most cherished independent venues, today we stop at The Polar Bear, on Spring Bank. Dating back all the way to the late 19th Century, The Polar Bear has evolved from a Victorian pub into one of Hull’s most beloved music venues. The stunning Grade II listed building retains many of its original features, including stained glass windows that cast colourful shadows across the venue and its performers – many of whom are often taking their first-steps onto the stage and into the spotlight. For those wondering where ‘the Bear’ gets its unique name from, the pub stands opposite the former Hull Zoological Gardens – a forgotten Victorian attraction that stood on the corner of Spring Bank and Princes Avenue. Today, The Polar Bear is renowned for its eclectic programming. The venue’s recent renaissance has seen it become a hub for Hull’s thriving music scene, thanks in large part to it being the home of ‘The Sesh’ – a weekly live music night that attracts musicians from all over the country. The beer garden, with its distinctive mural depicting polar bears and whaling ships, has also become an Instagram favorite. If you love live music, good people and even better times, the Bear has always got your back. • Hull City Council is hosting a series of public engagement events as it launches its £6million Community Highstreets investment project. The citywide scheme aims to reinvigorate high streets through enhancing quality of place, environmental performance, accessibility, community services and satisfaction, as well as increasing footfall and reducing shop vacancy rates. An online survey will launch on Friday 31 January here ahead of in-person consultation sessions to find out what changes people would like to see in their centres and to help shape their futures. Six in-person sessions are confirmed, with more to be added as the consultation runs throughout February. The team will also be speaking to local schools and community groups to get their views. HEY Volunteers will be visible in communities to promote the project and encourage participation. As a token of appreciation, wildflower seeds and tubs of every Hullensian’s favourite seasoning – American Chip Spice – will be handed out at random to those who speak to officers about the project. Cllr Jack Haines, portfolio holder for communities at the council, said: “The council is committed to supporting all areas of Hull, not just our city centre. “Local and neighbourhood centres are vital to sustaining thriving communities and our multi-cultural and diverse centres should be celebrated. “It is pleasing that the council is able to dedicate the Community Highstreets scheme to ensuring their long-term sustainability and I look forward to hearing the views of residents and stakeholders.” Following the High Street Accelerator pilot programme in the Stepney area of Beverley Road, the council earmarked a major investment of £6 million for improvement works on high streets across the city. Community Highstreets is a grassroots and community-led project, with all improvement works coming from direct responses provided by those who give their feedback as part of the survey. • 🎤 This week is Independent Venue Week, so we will be proudly shining a light on some of the city’s best-loved destinations. And you can’t talk about independent venues in Hull without mentioning an iconic terraced house turned music venue off Newland Avenue, so ladies and gentleman, we start with the one and only…The New Adelphi Club For more than three decades, The New Adelphi Club has been one of the cornerstones of Hull’s independent music scene. Nestled away on De Grey Street, this institute of a venue has played host to some of music’s most iconic names, going back multiple decades. The venue, as we know it today, opened in 1984 under the ownership of Paul Jackson – or ‘Jacko’ as he’s known to many. Paul transformed, what was once a terraced house, into a vital stepping stone for emerging artists. Its wooden floors have felt the stomping feet of early performances from Pulp, Oasis, and The Stone Roses, while local legends like The Housemartins also cut their teeth on its modest but legendary stage. The Adelphi celebrated its 40th birthday last year and, as part of a little update, 15 of Pulp’s original flight cases, generously donated by the band, were turned into a unique new bar area. What makes the Adelphi truly special is its unwavering commitment to grassroots music. Unlike many venues that have succumbed to commercial pressures, the Adelphi has maintained its DIY ethos. The walls, plastered with decades of gig posters, tell stories of countless breakthrough moments and unforgettable nights. In 2022 its commitment to grassroots was recognised when it was named The UK Grassroots Music Venue of the Year. The Adelphi doesn’t just host gigs; it’s a community. You can watch an interview with the legendary 'Jacko' here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ewttQNzn
