Hydraulic Analysis Limited is the acknowledged worldwide leading engineering consultancy for undertaking single phase flow assurance and surge analysis studies. As an independent consultancy, we are able to offer our clients unbiased advice on all aspects of the hydraulic design and equipment selection. With 40 years experience and over 8,000 studies completed, we are trusted by the world’s major water, oil, gas, nuclear and petrochemical companies to conduct detailed dynamic flow studies. Using simulators, developed within the group, we undertake design work at FEED and EPC stages and we also investigate operating problems and proposed changes in operating philosophy on existing systems to verify pipeline and control system design. The main advantages of our software when compared to other commercially available products is the use of a continually varying pipeline wavespeed together with the ability to model pumping stations / valve stations with a smaller distance increment when compared to the main pipeline. When combined with our ability to model any type of control system (multiple PID controllers on valves / pumps, timers, HIPPS settings or override sensors) and accurate temperature variations along the system, this results in truly accurate modeling of pipeline systems. We have an extensive portfolio of validation cases to demonstrate the proven accuracy of our software, including many realtime liquid and gas systems. Our software typically shows just a 1% or 2% difference between recorded values on site.

NEOM Trojena Water Supply System Digital Twin The Hydraulic Analysis Group are delighted to have been awarded the contract to install a live pipeline hydraulic model in the water supply system SCADA control room of the iconic Trojena area of NEOM. This Digital Twin will run alongside the many other installations we have delivered to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in partnership with Yokogawa and we are grateful that NEOM trust us to be their digital partner. The Varisim Pipeline Simulation Software suite is the world leading product for pipeline Digital Twins and is operational in many countries. By creating a digital replica of a pipeline and running it continually live with pressure and flow data in the control room, it is much easier and faster to identify and locate leaks and broken pipes. Our VariSim visualization dashboards give a clear picture on how the pipeline is operating and it is possible to simulate virtual leaks and optimize the asset performance by testing out design improvements. EPANet based steady state engines struggle in the real world as they cannot solve for all pressure and flow conditions and they cannot simulate control systems. This can cause issues when they are expected to process and solve real world pipeline operating conditions which often results in calculations being abandoned or data being heavily averaged during transient operation. They are useful offline models but, as they cannot integrate directly with live data without a modeller filtering the data, we believe they cannot be considered a Digital Twin. As VariSim is driven by a transient engine, it will always solve for a given pressure and flow condition and will closely match reality. The contract also includes supplying a pipeline SCADA training simulator. Our training simulators involve installing a SCADA front end on the hydraulic model which then operates like a flight simulator and is indistinguishable by the operators from the real SCADA system. This allows them to interact with the pipeline and test out operational / control system changes without fear of damaging the real pipeline. We look forward to working with NEOM and delivering our world leading Digital Twin, including a fully live hydraulic model, into their control center.
