The world's most authoritative biodiversity data for your world-shaping decisions

About us

IBAT is a web-based mapping and reporting tool used by companies, governments, researchers, and financial institutions to access global biodiversity datasets with which to make better decisions around the environment. IBAT has 100s of users including WWF, the World Bank Group, Shell, Mitsubishi, Cambridge University, and the Department of Environment Australia. IBAT has been developed and is maintained by the IBAT Alliance, a partnership of leading conservation organizations, including BirdLife International (BirdLife), Conservation International (CI), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and UN Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC). Through IBAT, the Alliance seeks to support both better decision making and the improved collection, update and management of biodiversity data to inform those decisions.

  • There were so many take-outs from #COP16 for the #IBAT team. 1. 💡 Inspiration. There are so many dedicated, passionate people in the global conservation space that it is impossible not to come away inspired. 2. 📈 Progress. Yes, it has been made. Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Protocol Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) calls to conserve 30% of land waters and seas. The Protected Planet Report was released during COP16, and shows the progress made since the KMGBF was agreed. Since 2020 the world has set aside area equivalent to twice the size of Colombia. 3. 🔬 Plenty more work to do. According to the same report, we currently conserve only 17.6% of land and only 8.4% of waters. The latest IUCN Red List update shows that more than 1 in 3 tree species assessed are threatened with extinction, more than mammals, birds and amphibians combined. 4. 📳 Data. It really tells the story, and it unlocks action. Throughout panels and sessions, IBAT heard so many examples of how the public and private sector are using data to inform their decision making. 5. 📣 Resource mobilisation. It’s a key issue. The KMGBF targets mobilising at least USD 20 billion from developed countries by 2025. We are still well short and the private sector has a key role to play. The majority of nature related finance currently comes from public sources, but all parties, both public and private, are needed to deliver the resources needed to achieve our collective nature goals. 6. 🌺 Target 14 of the KMGBF asks for biodiversity to be incorporated into decision making. While disclosures are one way to do this (Target 15), what’s even more important is the action that comes out from disclosures. 7. 📆 Governments and the private sector need to work closely together. COP16 served as a platform for private and public sectors to come together, but there is an urgency to move beyond talking to pragmatic, well-informed action. ... and so much more... In Ed's words: 'the work really is just getting started, and there’s an awful lot left to do but there’s also never been a more exciting time to be working in #biodiversity #conservation.' ⬇   A huge thank you to all of our partners, collaborators and supporters and to all those working so hard in this space🙏 We look forward to continuing to work together.

  • The final day of COP16 for the IBAT team and what an inspiring and significant event. Now watch the video and read the 5 key take-aways for a quick round-up of the many remaining challenges and the equally positive opportunities ahead for biodiversity. Here are the key 5 IBAT take-aways. 1. Inspiration. There are so many dedicated, passionate people in the global conservation space that it is impossible not to come away inspired. 2. Progress. • Day 8 for IBAT at COP16 and it’s been an interactive time with new and existing IBAT users on the booth at the Innovation & Tech Expo. This is where leading biodiversity tech companies like IBAT show how data and mapping platforms help the private sector navigate their way towards their nature positive commitments. Emily Howland, Programme Officer, UNEP-WCMC also joins the IBAT team to talk about the most significant numbers from the latest Protected Planet Report.

  • Day 5 for the IBAT team at COP16 as tangible engagement between business and nature comes ever closer. This COP has seen the greatest number of attendees from the business sector with over 3,000 representatives. This compares with COP15 with 1,000 representatives and COP14 with 300. 🌳🐅 Hear more about why biodiversity is important for businesses from Oluwaṣòótọ́ Ajayi at Business for Nature! #COP16 #PeaceWithNature #biodiversity #DataforLife #Data #IBAT #IBATAlliance

  • Here's a quick summary. 17.6% of land and inland waters and 8.4% of the ocean and coastal areas globally are within documented protected and conserved areas. Protected and conserved areas must almost double in area on land and more than triple in the ocean for the 30% target to be reached by 2030. This is a land area roughly the size of Brazil and Australia combined, and at sea an area larger than the Indian Ocean. The world is falling short on the quality as well as the coverage of protected and conserved areas.
